Former Gophers coach Tracy Claeys offered Mafe a scholarship after seeing him play against Eden Prairie in September, but since then a lot of chatter on the future of the No. 7 recruit in NFN's Class of 2017 rankings has gone quiet. He recently picked up a Rutgers offer which joined Minnesota as the other Power 5 conference school to offer him.
The 220-pound linebacker confirmed last night he will announce his commitment before National Signing Day on February 1, but with the coaching change at Minnesota it’s fair to say Mafe’s future plans are unknown. He has another FBS offer from Wyoming, as well as FCS offers from South Dakota State, North Dakota and Northern Iowa.
