Nevis wins Football University Team of the Week
Revenge wasn’t the only thing Nevis’ 44-12 win over Waubun earned the Tigers in Week 3.
They also won the Football University Team of the Week voting with over 60 percent of fan votes. Nevis scored the final 28 points of the game to defeat the previously-unbeaten Bombers, which ended the Tigers 2016 season with a comeback victory in the Section 6, 9-Man final.
“The guys were extremely focused after last season’s loss to the Bombers,” said Nevis coach Shawn Klimek via email. “It was a great win for our school.”
Senior quarterback Jack DeWulf threw for 144 yards and two touchdown passes, both to younger brother, Luke. He also ran for two more, providing plenty of offense for the Tigers stout defense, which forced seven turnovers.
Senior Jack Landquist paced the unit with 12 tackles and a fumble recovery.
Klimek said his team’s defensive play was important, but added that the offensive line and running backs also played extremely well in the victory. Nevis totaled 238 yards rushing, led by Kyle Schmidt’s 134.
“We realize that it is only Week 4 and there is a lot of football to be played,” Klimek said. “We need to make sure we are improving each week.”
Minnetonka finished second in the FBU Team of the Week voting. The Skippers win over Maple Grove garnered nearly 32 percent of the votes.
