Zimmerman wins Week 1 Team of the Week
Zimmerman is the Northstar Football News Team of the Week after winning the fan voting following its Week 1 victory over Delano.
The Thunder trailed the Tigers by a field goal entering the fourth quarter, but scored 21-straight points to pull away. Quarterback Carter McEachern scored both of his rushing touchdowns in the final frame, including a one-yard plunge that gave his squad the lead for good.
“Our guys continued to battle and move on when we faced adversity during the game. They continued to play with energy and grit throughout,” said Thunder coach Tom Kish via email. “Even though we were still down by three at the end of the third quarter, the momentum had shifted and our guys confidence grew.”
Landon Berroa led Zimmerman with 95 yards rushing, putting the game away with a 55-yard touchdown run late in the fourth. The Thunder host Foley in Week 2, looking to keep the positive momentum going this Friday.
“Many of our players have had a big chip on their shoulder throughout the offseason as they have had to put up with hearing from others that this fall will be a rebuilding year for our team,” Kish said. “We have some very good football players and are not a young team.”
The Thunder’s upset of the top-ranked Tigers earned them over 42 percent of the vote. Their closest challengers were White Bear Lake and Zumbrota-Mazeppa, which both garnered around 25 percent of the tally.
