Listed by the Knights as 6’2, 227 lbs. but stated by himself as 6’2, 210 lbs., the future 2021 grad looked big on the field and filled some holes with such force the echo of the pops would ring throughout the stadium. He continued to impress all game against a tough and mean Spring Lake Park offense that has been used to bullying people all season. I was fortunate enough to get an interview with Taylor shortly after the game for Northstar Football News and came away impressed with what the MLB had to say about his season, playing football at Irondale, and his recruitment so far this season.
Taylor with the tackle.NFN: Hello, Trent. It was fun watching you play a couple Saturdays ago. Tell our readers a little bit about yourself and when you started playing football.
Taylor: “I’m from Minneapolis and I started playing football in 7th grade. I am a natural leader. I like playing football because it takes my mind off whatever’s going on. I’m 6’2, 210 lbs., and something I like about football is how you work as a team to achieve one common goal.”
NFN: How was your 2018 season and the offseason last year? What is it like playing football at Irondale?
Taylor: “My highlight of the 2018 season was leading the team in tackles in my first varsity game and the lowlight of the season was missing four games from fracturing my tibia. I feel that I learned that I need to focus on football only during the season. Missing four games and playing the last two not at 100% was definitely not as I would have liked it to go. In the offseason I played basketball in the winter and lacrosse in the spring and I lifted weights in the summer. To better my game I watched a lot of film and I worked on my footwork. Playing football at Irondale is a very family atmosphere and what I like about it is always knowing that my coaches and teammates believe in me no matter what happens.”
NFN: How was Irondale’s 2019 season?
Taylor: “This season didn’t go as planned as we went 3-7. Some things you can expect from the Knights and myself next year is that we are going to buy in as a team and work as hard as we can in the offseason to make sure next season goes how we want it to. The main things I am going to work on this offseason is my speed and explosiveness. I will be playing lacrosse in the spring as well.”
NFN: Any recruiting news? What level are you looking to play at?
Taylor: “I’m open to all schools but some schools I’m interested in playing at are UMD and Bemidji. I am considering D2 and D3 but I haven’t been contacted by any schools yet.”
I’d be excited to contact this young man first if I was a D3 or D2 coach in the region!
