Well, let me introduce you to Wayzata’s 2020 stud quarterback Tom Schmidt. The 6’1, 190 lber. just helped hang a banner in Wayzata’s gym and is now looking for a college program to call home for the 2020 football season along with his twin brother and Wayzata’s LB Matt. The leading Trojan passer in 2019 lead Wayzata to an undefeated 13-0 season and went 60-96 (62.5%) for 1,022 yards and 13 TDs with only two interceptions in the regular season. His 129.4 passer rating was one of the top ratings in the state, and this all came against the toughest teams week-to-week that Minnesota has to offer. A natural passer with a good arm, natural athleticism, and great game management skills, Schmidt is looking to play football at the D1 or DII level in college. The All-District 2019 selection was kind enough to give Northstar Football News some of his time to discuss how he began playing football, the magical 2019 Wayzata season, and any news he has on recruitment. Enjoy! Hudl:
NFN: Hello and thank you for your time, Tom! Congratulations on the impressive 2019 title run. Start by introducing yourself to our readers and tell us about the Trojans ’18 season. If you could, please also give us some detail into the expectations going into the 2019 season for Wayzata.
Schmidt: “I was born in Maple Grove, Minnesota and now I live in Medina. I started playing football in 3rd grade. I have an identical twin brother and my family is super important to me. I was the QB of Wayzata this year and we went undefeated and won the championship. I love playing football because of the relationships and the bonds I make with people. I am 6’1” weigh 185, 40 is 5.00, I maxed out at 225 bench and 345 Squat. Last year I did not play on varsity. The 2018 season was bitter. We lost in the section finals and all of the guys returning said that isn’t going to be us.
Schmidt. We were going to be better. My expectations for 2019 were be the starting QB and lead this team to a state title. To do this me and the whole team put in a lot of work. Working out, focusing on our position, and getting better both with Wayzata’s coaches and other trainers. Wayzata is a true family. I wouldn’t want to play for any other high school, the coaching and the community is unreal. The support is insane.”
NFN: That’s awesome. Please tell us a little bit about the 2019 season in your own words!
Schmidt: “My first eight games went well. I had games where I threw for over 200 yards, had some games where I threw for over 100 yards, and games where I threw for less than 100. But the end result was always the same. A Win. We played Blaine ,Edina, Prior Lake, STMA, Eden Prairie,Minnetonka, Shakopee, Burnsville. I finished the regular season with 1,022 yards 13 TD’s and 2 INTs. In the playoffs we played Eagan, East Ridge, Centennial, Lakeville South, and Champlin Park. The first two games I think I was out before the first half, we killed them. Then the last 3 were tougher but we were able to power through and get it done, relying on the trust and the love of one another got us through and pushed us to go hard every play for your brother. I finished the playoffs with 535 yards, 6 TD’s and 2 INTS.”
NFN: Great finish to the season, Tom. Where are you in the recruiting process and who have you been in contact with?
Schmidt: “Just getting started with the recruiting process. I think I can play D2 and possibly go D1. If you look at who played at Eden Prairie last year and is now at Minnesota, his senior year he finished with 1,232 yards, 8 TD’s and 0 INTS.
I think my stats reflect that and show I can provide the same impact. I haven’t been talked to by a lot of colleges (Luther College, St. Scholastica, River Falls, UW-Stout) those are it.”
Hopefully his recruitment begins to pick up more soon here. Stay tuned for updates on the Wayzata senior, whichever college lands him is getting a baller.
