We chatted with Carter McEachern of the Zimmerman Thunder about his final season in a Thunder uniform, his recruiting interest, and more.
Carter McEachern, Class of 2020 (Senior)
Position: Quarterback/Defensive Back
High School Program: Zimmerman
Get to Know Carter McEachern
McEachern was QB1 and a very tall 6’6 safety for the Zimmerman Thunder this past season. He is a competitor “like no other” and hates losing which just shows how strong he is as far his competitive spirit. “I’ll do anything it takes to win,” Carter told Northstar Football News. Carter’s biggest strengths on the field are his leadership, keeping everyone’s spirits high no matter how much adversity there might be. As far as future coaching, he said he’s looking for “next level coaching” to take his football career to the next level in the college game.
Best Parts About Quarterback/Safety
Carter said the best part about the quarterback position is that every single play runs thru you and he gets to lead the offense to get the opportunity to make big plays. On the defensive side of the ball, McEachern enjoys making the big hits as safety and being a ballhawk and picking off quarterbacks. Being a quarterback himself, McEachern has a great knowledge of reading quarterbacks reads and where their eyes are.
College Interest
Carter does have some D-2 interest from Augustana (SD). Carter said he would love an opportunity to play college football. “I have a ton of potential and am waiting for a school to allow me to play at a high level,” Carter said in his pitch to college coaches to give him a chance in the college game.
Improvement from the Off-Season by McEachern
With having a change in offensive coordinator last season, McEachern had to change his gameplan to air it out more than he had in past years. He worked on his footwork in the pocket and staying calm under pressure to prove that he could be dominant in Zimmerman’s new passing attack. He also learned more about how to read the defense easier and know exactly what they were giving him. Playing safety gave him an edge on what the defense shows a quarterback.
Carter’s Mentor
McEachern said his biggest mentor is his older brother Taylor McEachern who was the reason he got into football while watching him compete and dominate with the Zimmerman Thunder football program. He said Taylor also gave him the urge to always be just a little better than he was. Taylor taught Carter his work ethic. “He drilled it in my head that I have to train like the best and to be fearless on the field,” He told NFN about his older brother, Taylor and how he described the work ethic attitude they shared.
Biggest Things Carter Learned About Himself This Season
Carter learned that any goal can be achieved if you have the right mindset. “The little things go a long way,” McEachern told Northstar Football News. With the quarterback position, Carter also stated the trust in your teammates is huge and being the quarterback you have to be their right-hand man in all situations on offense.
