LOUIS PARK– For your late Tuesday morning reading, Northstar Football News caught up with one the young guys that stuffs the run on the defensive line for the St. Louis Park Orioles. We caught up with 2023 NFN prospect John Barrow who’s already been getting some interest from a Division I program in his young career. We’ll also cover much more with Barrow.
Get to Know John Barrow
Barrow is the young stud of the Orioles defensive line. At 6’1 235 pounds, he already as a freshman has good size for the Orioles to depend on in the middle of that rush defense. Some things people should know about Barrow is his tough work ethic he brings to the table and his coachability as a young player in that Orioles defense. Barrow understands what it’s like to be a student-athlete and told NFN he knows he is a “student first” which shows that Barrow is a player that not only wants to succeed on the field but academically too. Barrow has worked actively with GameFace Training out of Maple Grove this offseason on his footwork and getting him stronger for the 2020 season. His biggest strengths are his speed and strength of the football. Barrow told NFN he’s “always up” for winning battles with the offensive line on the other side of the football.
Favorite Parts About Defensive Line
The physicality is what does it for Barrow. ” You have 4 quarters to dominate the person from across from you it’s a lot of technique to this position but I truly love this position,” he said to NFN about the ole defensive line favorites. As for his other position of defensive end, the speed of and the pursuit of the offensive linemen’s outside hip is “just pure fun.”
College Interest/His Pitch to College Coaches
Most kids we’ve talked to from the class of 2023 haven’t had any interest as of yet, but that’s not the case with John Barrow. Barrow has heard from Abilene Christian of Division I FCS, which is in the Southland Conference and is a way west of the Dallas-Fort Worth area. As for Barrow’s pitch to the college coaches, this is what he told Northstar Football News in his elevator pitch: “What I would bring to the table for colleges is that I am very coachable and will give it my all on every snap, and will do my best, and always will do what coach tells me to do, and just having fun and playing the sport I love. I just want to end up playing football at the highest level, I want to play at a high-level school and go to college for free.”
Improving in 2020
Barrow said the Orioles coaching staff, much like all high school coaches, want John Barrow to get stronger and stronger as the years go by as he begins his sophomore season. Since the season ended, Barrow has gotten to work at GameFace Training working hard at his speed and focusing on techniques that make defensive linemen go.
John’s Mentor
Barrow’s father has helped John so much with his game, he doesn’t know where he would be without him. He thanks his dad for taking him to every workout, every practice, every game meeting, really getting John some of the best football equipment on the market and having those tough conversations after games in the car, and whenever John has faced an injury, his dad has been there for that. Getting that response from this interview question, puts it into perspective on how much John Barrow appreciates his dad, and how every kid playing high school sports, should thank all their parents for the number of hours they spend making sure their son or daugther was born ready to play their sport.
Learning from 2019
Barrow took in his freshman year in to realize how great of a person he is and learned where his skill set was as a young freshman. “If I do what I’m supposed to do in life, I’m going to make it far,” Barrow told NFN about his self-motivation. Barrow knows he needs to surround himself with his Oriole teammates that have the same goals he does team-wise and individually. With that mentality, we know Barrow has the potential to be a run-stuffer we talk a lot about a few years from now.
