Marlon Wiley is a 5’10”, 180 pound Wide Receiver from Jordan. He is about to complete his Freshman year at South Dakota State, where he was on the Track and Field team. In his first season at SDSU, even though he never competed, he has upped his speed even more with some college track experience, he lowered his 40 time from a 4.42 to a 4.37. In his Senior Season at Jordan, he was a speed receiver that was a great vertical threat for the Hubmen in the 2018 season. He posted 78 receptions, 946 yards and 8 touchdowns in his final season in 2018. While he enjoyed his only season on the Jackrabbit Track and Field team, Wiley decided he missed the gridiron too much and entered the transfer portal. I was able to catch up with him and interview him on his decision and thoughts for his future. Check it out below.
Wiley- Bill PiotrowskiNFN: Hello Marlon, first off, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you began playing football.
Wiley: My name is Marlon Wiley, I like to read lot. I started playing football in 4th grade, I played quarterback first when I was in a youth league in Richfield. My team won back-to-back youth championships in 4th and 5th grade. In 6th grade I moved to Jordan and also switched to running back until my sophomore year, where I was switched to slot receiver and defensive back.
NFN: After a year of running college track, what was the thing that made you miss football the most?
Wiley: I loved running track at South Dakota State. My teammates were awesome and the coaching staff was unbelievably supportive. I was excited to grow under Coach Hanenberger and become a better sprinter. Unfortunately, I missed the camaraderie of football, also the pads cracking and the big plays. I realized if I ever wanted to play football again, I would need to do it now or never.
NFN: How has recruiting been since you entered the transfer portal? What kind of program are you looking for?
Wiley: When I first entered the portal, I was overwhelmed with schools contacting me. I think I had 7-10 calls that first day. I’m looking for two things when I make my decision, opportunity and location. I’m hoping for an opportunity to contribute right away and to earn a business degree from a school that can send me into a career after college. Also a school that is in a location to maximize business opportunities in my major.
NFN: Would you be open to being a dual sport athlete in college with both track and football?
Wiley: Yes, my main focus is to get back on the football field and get to work right away. If the opportunity came where I could do both I would definitely take it because I feel I have a lot of potential left in the sport.
Wiley has been contacted by schools in the NSIC (D2), WIAC, UMAC, MIAC (D3), and GPAC (NAIA). Many of which could offer him both spots on their roster for track and football.
