After spending two seasons at Anoka – playing both QB and CB – Schuster made the move to Blaine and has continued a tradition of standout QBs that includes former Arizona State walk-on Connor Melton Connor Melton QB Blaine | 2018 State MN . Schuster was kind enough to give Northstar Football News some of his time to discuss why he switched back to playing quarterback after a move to the defensive backfield, which schools were on his junior day visit list, how Blaine overcame the Woodbury Royals in that section game, and more. Thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoy! Junior Year Highlights
#10 hanging in the pocket.NFN: Hello and thank you for your time, Tyler. Please begin by telling our readers a little bit about yourself.
Schuster: “I started playing football in first grade in the Andover youth association, I played baseball and basketball as well but never had the same love for those sports as I did football.”
NFN: Now tell us a little bit about your football career previous to the 2019 season!
Schuster: “I went to Anoka High School freshman and sophomore year, and sophomore year I started the first 4 games at cornerback then after that played quarterback the rest of the year. Quarterback has been my main position ever since I started playing football.”
NFN: Now share a little bit about the 2019 season, including that big playoff W against Woodbury.
Schuster: “This last year at Blaine was far better of a year then it looked on paper. We had a young team and were battling injuries all year long, and we had arguably the toughest schedule around and competed hard with every team. As a team we never hung our heads or had the thought of quitting, we continued to grow throughout the year and we saw improvements each week. Everything really payed off that first section game against Woodbury, we came together as a team and our defense played outstanding and kept giving the offense chances to put points on the board and we did. That was definitely the best game of our season. After that we matched up against a really solid Lakeville North team, we played our hearts out but unfortunately didn’t come out on top.”
NFN: The Bengals have a solid core of returning seniors coming back next year. What are some things you guys are focusing on to find success in 2020?
Schuster: “We have a solid core of players coming back, you can see the fire that each player brings, we just finished a really good winter weights program and have many players including myself doing offseason personal training. All of our players have high hopes of this next season and have our eyes locked in on that state tournament.”
#10NFN: How about recruiting? Who are some teams you’re interested in/currently contacting? Also, what do you think you can add to a college program?
Schuster: “I took a game day visit to UND during last season, and was planning on taking junior days to UND, NDSU, SDSU, UNI, and St. Thomas, I’ve had a lot of D2 schools show attention as well but my goal would be to go D1. I feel like I am a dynamic player and can air out the ball quite a bit but when needed I can use my legs and put the defense in a bind.”
