Continue ReadingI’ve been making a deliberate effort to not try and discuss the COVID-19 pandemic and its affect on the college recruiting landscape for the MN preps I am blessed to cover, but with campus visits and even face-to-face meetings delayed it’s time to dive headfirst into promoting the c/o 2020 unsigned athletes from each and every position group on the gridiron. These ’20 athletes are the most impacted, so any kind of exposure these articles can provide will hopefully be helpful and important. Northstar Football News will begin these features with the game-changing DL position, and just like the previous LB feature Minnesota has a particularly deep unsigned 2020 class with some high-profile trench warfare specialists still uncommitted. Whether it’s a NG, 3T, or 5T D-ends, there’s a MN stud for you. Take a look at some still available heavy-hitters, and enjoy the review of their careers and accomplishments. Thanks for reading!
Spencer Poll – DelanoQuientrail Jamison-Travis (MPLS North) @Quientrail50 6’3, 275 lbs. Second Team AP & MFCA All-State, KARE11 & MNFootballHub First Team All-Metro, 2019 Minnesota Vikings All-State Team, 2019 MN All-Star Game participant, posted 83 tackles, 19 sacks, 21 TFLs for the Class 2A state championship runner-up Polars. I have it on good authority that if academically accepted, Jamison-Travis will be heading to Ames, Iowa to play for the Iowa State Cyclones. However, there’s been no news, so he’s still uncommitted. Regular Season Senior Highlights
Joseph Akoh (Cretin-Derham Hall) @Joseph88055588 6’4, 205 lbs. All-District, 2019 MN All-Star. Hard to find any stats or accolades, but in his film it’s obvious the CDH Raider is a super twitchy and explosive DE with a great motor and a ton of room to put on weight. His Twitter is pretty inactive, but he seems to be unsigned. Check him out. Senior Year
Spencer Poll (Delano) @poll_spencer 6’0, 250 lbs. 3x All-District, District OL & DL MVP, MN All-Star Game participant. Love the kid’s film. With a low center of gravity and ton of strength behind his hands, he’s a force to be reckoned with, and shows a ton of potential for a college DL room. Poll is aggressive, nasty, and relentless, and I hope he finds his way onto a college football roster next fall.
Using my free time in quarantine, I FINALLY put together my senior szn highlight reel. Just made this for fun, ENJOY! pic.twitter.com/nqEpdO3Ndd

Isaac Rubey (MPLS Roosevelt) All-District, All-District Dline MVP, MN All-Star Game participant. Can’t find any stats or film, but Rubey also qualified for the state tournament twice (I think) as a heavyweight wrestler for the Teddies, and I really wish I could have seen him play as a prep. As far as I know Rubey is uncommitted, and according to the Roosevelt High School twitter account (@FollowTheTeddy) who has tweeted about his accolades he hasn’t committed, so I am going to assume he’s on the market. His AD Al Frost Jr. (612) 668-4800 is the best info I could find in regards to the senior, and I hope someone puts in a little bit of work to try and sign the kid.
Carson Steen (Big Lake) @CarsonSteen1 MN All-Star Game participant, All-District. Played against some big competition such as Bemidji and Hutchinson and made some big-time plays in those games that pattern some other monstrous plays on his Hudl as a NG & 3T, Steen has a semi-active twitter account with followers from coaches from St. John’s University and South Dakota State but has no reported offers. Hit him up! Senior Highlights
Chase Smith (Bemidji) @chasesm63442788 MN All-Star Game participant, District Lineman MVP, All-District, 3rd place 285AAA wrestler in 2020 MN state wrestling tournament. Smith’s great wrestling background for the Lumberjacks as a heavyweight translates to his film, as he has great hands, size, strength, and understanding of leverage that helped him excel as an Olineman and Dlineman. Senior SZN Highlights
Drake Teal Drake Teal 6'5" | 215 lbs | DL St. Paul Johnson | 2020 State MN 6’4, 220 lbs. 25 ACT. 2x All-District. @d19teal A captain and two-sport star for the Governors as a DE on the gridiron and RW on the hockey team, Teal is a long and athletic DE with a great frame to put on weight and was almost unstoppable in his Twin City subdistrict. He recently spoke with Northstar Football News and said “one might be in the works” in regards to an upcoming commitment, so I believe he’s still on the market. Midseason Senior Hudl

Isaiah Dempsey (Mound Westonka) 6’2, 220 lbs. @IsaiahDempsey MN All-Star participant, three-year starter, 4-year letter winner for the White Hawks and was a Twin Cities All-District selection in both 2018 and 2019. Also was selected as the Twin Cities Most Valuable Defensive Lineman in 2018 and the Twin Cities Most Valuable Offensive Lineman in 2019. Also plays basketball for Mound Westonka, and has more basketball tape on his Hudl than football highlights, but I’ll link every game. vs. MPLS Southwest vs. Providence Academy vs. Highland Park vs. Academy Force vs. St. Paul Johnson
Quincy Jones Quincy Jones DL Irondale | 2020 State MN (Irondale) 6’0, 295 lbs. @qjones79 2x All-District, two-way starter for the Knights, visited St. Cloud State (rip) and was offered by the University of Sioux Falls last summer. Got to see him play live against Spring Lake Park and he definitely stood out and looked dominant on both sides of the football, but I think he projects a lot better as a Dlineman in college. Moves really well for his size and can get through or around double teams, I hope someone lands the prospect in these next two critical months. Senior Season Highlights
Jack Bentson (Pillager) 5’10, 225 lbs. @JackBentson22 2x District POTY. Also played fullback and was a Mack Truck of a ball carrier for the Huskies and is a versatile prospect who could potentially play a variety of positions in college with NG/3T experience on the defensive side of the ball and the athleticism to play linebacker. Only has junior highlights available however. Junior Highlights
Jax Wysong (Hills-Beaver Creek) 6’3, 220 lbs. @WysongJax 2x All-Area, All-Conference. Visited SDSU, Mankato St, UND. Great athlete for the Beavers who played WR and returned punts, and made some impressive plays at the position on his junior year tape, Wysong shows some natural passing rushing abilities and potential and the frame to excel in college on the DL. Junior Year Highlights
Elijah Leonard (Duluth East) 5’10, 255 lbs. @leon99rd A super intriguing prospect up in Duluth who doubled as the Greyhounds RB and has some fun highlights to boot, I did see an article about how the then junior may forgo playing football as a senior to pursue his dream of being a surgeon, but he does follow college football accounts on his Twitter so it may be worth a shot to hit him up. Junior SZN Highlights
Luis Fuentes (St. Paul Johnson) @LuisFuentes2020 Totaled 50 tackles, 6 sacks, 3 FFs in 2019 season. Has a great potential as a prospect as he is a fast DLineman with good hands, strength, and athleticism to properly execute stunts, Fuentes would make a good addition to a college DL room for the 2020 season. Senior Year Highlights
Javonni Grimes (MPLS Edison) @GrimesJavonni
Michael Harris (Park Center) @MichaelDHarris 6’2, 200 lbs. Totaled 79 tackles, 15 TFLs, 2 sacks for the Pirates in 2019. Ton of upside as a recruit with a lot of experience/reps, a great frame, aggressive mentality, and speed on the outside. Senior SZN Highlights
Hope you enjoyed! Stay safe, everyone.
