DeKalb QB [player_tooltip player_id="20224" first="Trenton" last="Kyler"]One squad that has a ton of talent entering 2020 is DeKalb high school. They have multiple prospects in our 2021 & 2022 player rankings, and they’ll be led by senor signal-caller Trenton Kyler Trenton Kyler 6'0" | 170 lbs | QB Dekalb | 2021 IL . What he may lack a little in size at 6’, 165 he more than makes up for in sheer talent. This is a left-handed quarterback prospect with a lightning-quick release. Kyler has excellent footwork in the pocket and does a great job of transferring his weight on deep throws. Kyler is in sync with his wideouts & his timing is evident on film, especially on intermediate throws over the middle. He naturally climbs the pocket and drops the deep-ball right into the WR’s hands in stride. The part that separates him from most is his blistering speed. Kyler is easily one of the fastest quarterback prospects in the state. He adds a real threat in the zone read and power read game. Once the pocket collapses, he’s able to take off and make a play with his legs and has the vision of a running back once he enters the open field. He has an uncanny ability to throw on the run and is a natural at throwing from awkward arm angles when under duress.
In-Depth:
Last season was a good one for the DeKalb Barbs; they finished 7-4 before falling to a very talented Mt. Prospect squad in the first round of the 7A playoffs. They joined a new conference and were extremely competitive, playing against fierce competition. Kyler took last seasons playoff loss hard and felt like it should have had a different result.
“Team-wise, I think we let the playoff game slip from us, but with being in the new conference I was very proud of us tying for 2nd in the conference.”
Being that last year was his second season on varsity, Trenton felt like he took a big step forward. However, he wouldn’t give himself too much satisfaction.
“Individually it was a huge step for me going from a sophomore on varsity to a junior it felt very different like everything slowed down, but it still wasn’t easy in the new conference, but I was pretty solid throughout the year but not satisfied.”
Kyler is eagerly awaiting the start of next season. He let me know he’s already throwing to receivers, both new and old. He’s hit the weights hard and even is partaking in grueling sandpit workouts. I asked him what he’s most looking forward to entering his senior season.
“Meeting the new OC and going out to play with all my brothers, especially my senior brothers, because we have a ton to prove for our last year and leave the best mark we can for the Class of 2021 at DHS.”
With another year under his belt, look for Kyler to take another big step forward. DeKalb’s 2020 squad is littered with college prospects and Trenton has big goals for himself and the 2020 Barbs.
“I want to be All-Conference, as well as win the conference and get deep into the playoffs.”
Kyler, right now from a recruiting standpoint, is a little bit of an unknown. He hasn’t been seeing the attention of many of the bigtime programs just yet. However, don’t be mistaken; this is a very talented QB prospect with a lot of tools. Right now, Kyler has told me he’s heard from the likes of MSU-Moorhead, Indiana Wesleyan, Illinois Wesleyan, UW- Stout, and Northern State. However, none have offered just yet. When asked if he had a dream school, he gave this.
“Don’t really have a dream school; I just want the chance to play at the next level to prove myself wherever that would be.”
Due to the Covid-19 virus, he hasn’t taken a single in-person visit. The only visits he’s been able to partake in have been virtual. The one thing people may not know about him is that he’s also a standpoint basketball player on the hardwood for DeKalb. If I’m a college coach, I’m taking a chance on this kid. Kyler is a natural competitor paired with freaking athleticism for a quarterback. I’ve got a feeling we’re going to be hearing a lot about Trenton Kyler Trenton Kyler 6'0" | 170 lbs | QB Dekalb | 2021 IL in 2020.
