We will be making our way around the state, using several middle-sized cities as our home base as we try to get so many quarterbacks in our fine state the exposure they deserve to play at the next level. Here are three names that make up the QB1 rankings in the city of Duluth and the surrounding areas. We went north, south, east, and west to accumulate our list of QB prospects that make Duluth’s best of the best.
#3 Dean Hudoba, Class of 2022, Duluth East
Hudoba had very light reps last season for East, but I think has the tools to be a quality QB1 for the Greyhounds. Hudoba needs to work on hitting his receivers with less air on the ball as you’ll see a lot of arc on his passes that could cause trouble. Has good arm strength on deep balls, just needs less air on his passes between 10-20 yards. Hudoba will lose key wide receiver, Derek Daniels, to graduation, but should be consistent for the Greyhounds, who finished 5-3 last regular season.
#2 Mason Olson, Class of 2021, Moose Lake-Willow River
Olson may be more of a basketball prospect, but don’t think he isn’t a strong QB1 for the Rebels of MLWR too. Of these three prospects, Olson has the best arm strength in the area and when you search the tape, you see him making long throw after long throw. I would love to see a junior highlight film for football from Olson, as it may raise him even higher, as the top QB1 on this list of top quarterbacks from the North Shore.
#1 Evan Checkalski, Class of 2021, Proctor
The Proctor Rails run a heavy play-action passing attack with Checkalski leading the charge. Checkalski is the definition of a touch quarterback as he doesn’t have a ton of pop on his ball to his receivers but is excellent at hitting seams in the secondary where his receivers can catch the ball with ease. Speed-wise he probably runs around a 4.7-4.8 and can move to the outside but isn’t going to lead the Rails in rushing yards but can get outside and get a quality gain or hit his receivers in stride.
