Some of these teams fell just short of making the playoffs and others are a constant participant, but with the ball bouncing the right way this year and improvement in key areas, these teams all have the potential to make the state playoffs in Florida.
Today we look at a Wesley Chapel football team that finished 2019 5-5. Coach Egan’s teams are always well-coached and disciplined. Transfers in the Bay Area seem to be at an all-time high right now and Wesley Chapel has definitely felt the effects of it. Coach Egan’s team this year has been decimated by transfers on the defensive side of the ball, including top linebacker Jordan McCaslin who transferred to playoff contenders Tampa Bay Tech and Defensive Back JT Anderson who left for Chamberlain High. Wesley Chapel’s going to have to rely on their offense this year if they’re to get over the hill and contend for a playoff berth. They play in a tough district, so there’s no room for error, but if their offense is clicking it can be one of the best in their district. The offense will go through hidden gem c/o 22 WR Nehemiah Morgan who will be one of the top Playmakers in Pasco County. Coach Egan has several playmakers and If Wesley Chapel can get some improvement from the quarterback position and a revamped defense, I believe they could take a major step in the fight for a playoff spot.
I reached out to Coach Egan about the upcoming 2020 season and his outlook on his team. This is what he had to say:
“Nehemiah Morgan is our offensive stud. Plays receiver. Owen Libby is leading the QBs right now but it’s a 3-way battle between him, Matt Helms, and rising junior Ethan Harper. Jaylan Blake will be our tailback. Defensively we have been gutted by transfers but we expect Tyree Thomas and Tyre Brooks to be a staple on the defensive line. We had 4-5 starters transfer out off the defense and 3-4 kids graduate so the defense maybe 9-10 new faces for us this year”.
THE WILDCATS DOSSIER
SCHOOL: Wesley Chapel Wildcats
HEAD COACH: Anthony Egan
2019 RECORD: 5-5
CLASSIFICATION: 5A District 11
TEAM COLORS: Blue, White
Players to watch:
Nehemiah Morgan WR– Morgan will be one of the best receivers in Pasco County this season, he shows good hands and route-running ability, he also has the ability to find a seem and pickup long gains. I believe Wesley Chapel will use him in a variety of ways all over the field to try and get him as many touches as possible.
Jaylan Blake RB– c/o 22 Running back who shows good vision, nice speed to get to the edge, and has some ability to pass block. He runs hard and keeps his legs driving constantly. He’s a potential breakout player in Pasco County this year.
Owen Libby QB– has a prototype build for to be position 6’3 215lbs, shows decent athleticism, and the ability to throw on the run. He has good enough arm strength to make all the throws, shows a little Tebow, and will lower his head and deliver a blow to pick up extra yards. I see major Improvement coming from him this year.
