Some of these teams fell just short of making the playoffs and others are a constant participant, but with the ball bouncing the right way this year and improvement in key areas, these teams all have the potential to make the state playoffs in Florida.
Out-of-Door Academy football team finished 2019 6-3 and made the Sunshine State Athletic Conference playoffs. When head coach Chris Kempton step down in February, Out-of-Door Academy quickly promoted offensive coordinator KB Belton. Belton will continue to employ the spread offense that averaged 29 points per game last season. Out-of-Door Academy has a great nucleus of players returning, which will be led by their quarterback Tyler Beasley who has an offer from the University of Tennessee. This team has a chance to be one of the best in program history. I’m extremely excited to see how they progress this season under the leadership of Coach Belton.
I reached out to Coach Belton about the upcoming 2020 season and his outlook on his team. This is what he had to say:
” We are a young team this year with a great group of senior leadership. We have a great young nucleus of players that will have to step in a play for us this year.
Our Senior defensive Captain Nolan Lewellen will be the key to our defense. He was all-area as a sophomore. Battled through some injuries during the offense of his Jr year but now he is healthy and ready to have a breakout season defensively and offensively.
Our offensive captain QB Tyler Beasley will make our offense special. With an offer from the University of Tennessee already and other D-1 schools looking at him, he is ready to explode.
Notable players that we are expecting big things from this year with another offseason under their belt. SR tackle Mike Dyer, JR WR Conor Pope, SR Safety Wyatt Carlton, SR LB Patrick O’Keefe (who has an offer from Albright College), JR lineman Austin Goins, and Freshman Charlie Tack, who has blown away coaches with his progress. He will compete for the starting RB job this year”.
THE THUNDER DOSSIER
SCHOOL: Out-of-Door Academy Thunder
HEAD COACH: KB Belton
2019 RECORD: 6-3
CLASSIFICATION: Sunshine State – Coral Bay District
TEAM COLORS: Navy/White
Players to watch:
Tyler Beasley QB- Beasley is a dual-threat quarterback that has good footwork and is really accurate throwing the ball. Shows decent zip on the ball, and is really good at extending plays with his feet while keeping his eyes downfield for open receivers. He’s one of the best quarterbacks in Sarasota! He currently holds an offer from the University of Tennessee
Patrick O’Keefe LB- O’Keefe is extremely aggressive and will flat take your head off. He plays the linebacker position the way it’s supposed to be played. He’s smart and shows a very good ability to play in space.
Conner Pope WR- Pope who is a c/o 22 will be one of the main targets for Beasley this year. He shows good hands and the ability to get behind the defense. He also played some defense last year. I’m excited to see how his game progresses this season.
