Some of these teams fell just short of making the playoffs and others are a constant participant, but with the ball bouncing the right way this year and improvement in key areas, these teams all have the potential to make the state playoffs in Florida.
Sarasota football team finished 2019 6-4. Sarasota will have a new coach this year in Brody Wiseman, he takes over for Spencer Hodges who just completed his second season, but unfortunately had to give up coaching because of personal issues from the COVID-19 pandemic. Sarasota was always a Powerhouse in the area in years past. Sarasota started turning the corner last year and was in the hunt for the playoff spot most of the season. They have a great nucleus of players coming back and I completely expect them to be even better and be a dangerous out for anyone they play. Wiseman is one of the up and coming coaches in the area serving as the offensive coordinator for Sarasota last season and was an integral part of helping them turn the corner.
I reached out to Coach Wiseman about the upcoming 2020 season and his outlook on his team. This is what he had to say:
“We are looking to build off the success our Seniors started in 2019. We have a different type of team this year, but we always adapt our scheme to fit our personnel. We have a good group of senior leadership centered around Dom Bennett ATH, Jamal Thompson DE/TE, Terrell Pack ATH, Jalen Smith Jalen Smith 6'0" | 180 lbs | WR Shepard | 2021 IL RB/DE, Adam Oualdabba C, and receivers John Stanko and Spencer Brannen. Newcomers to keep an eye on including TJ McKay ATH, Jarmel Holloway RB, Tyler Pack WR. We have a deep QB room, complimented by size and experience up front”.
THE SAILORS DOSSIER
SCHOOL: Sarasota Sailors
HEAD COACH: Brody Wiseman
2019 RECORD: 6-4
CLASSIFICATION: 7A District 10
TEAM COLORS: Orange, Black
Players to watch:
Dom Bennett RB/ATH– the Sailors running game will run through Dom Bennett who had 51 carries for 399 yards last season. He is a scatback who has good feet in the hole, cut back vision and speed to score on long runs. He’s truly an athlete as the sailors used to him at a variety of different positions last year including safety and cornerback. He’s one of the more versatile players in the area.
Jamal Thompson DE/TE– Thompson registered 103 tkls, 2.5 sacks, and 13.5 tfl last season! He has two D-1 offers from Tennessee State and Southern Miss. He’ll be one of the ability to play at the line of scrimmage or drop into the deep third and single high the best defensive ends in the county this season, he shows a lot of versatility and position flexibility, and nothing shows that better than when they lined him up in the slot in pass coverage.
Terrell Pack SS/ATH– Terrell pack is one of my favorite players in the Sarasota County, the way he plays reminds me of the great former Miami safety Sean Taylor. Pack registered 101 tackles and 2 ints last season. He’s got great size at 6’3 it covers a lot of ground and packs a wallop. He has tremendous speed and explosiveness when delivering hits. He shows the ability to play close to the line of scrimmage or drop into single-high coverage. He currently has three D-1 offers from Southern Miss, Tennessee State, and UT Martin.
