There is no need for run stuffers or edge bending pass rushers, so you won’t find any of those players here. This is why you might not see the absolute best linebackers in the state because they don’t have quite the coverage traits that the ones that made the team do have. However, when we get to the defensive backfield you will find the best players at their positions and some of the best athletes the badger state has to offer. Let’s dive in and see how dominant, and athletic of a defense the Wisconsin class of 2021 can get!
Linebackers
Austin Dahlke- Edgar, 6’1″ 190
Dahlke flies around the field from his ILB position. He even has proven success on offense and demonstrated reliable hands, which will obviously come in hand in a 7-on-7 matchup with the best there. Austin also is very twitched up. He can read, react, and change direction so quickly. It is apparent why the D2 interest and offers have started rolling in. He is a playmaker and an enforcer on the field. He would be a great presence on this team.
Rudy Detweiler- Stoughton, 6’2″ 210
Rudy has the perfect makeup for this team. He has great length and overall size to cover any RB and roam the middle zone of our defense. He also plays with excellent speed for the position. Detweiler has no problem going sideline to sideline and has the agility that will allow him to play man on any RB or TE and has the closing speed to constantly be in position to make a play on the ball.

Nickel
Griffin Wiegel- Kimberly, 5’11” 170
Griffin should fit perfectly into the nickel role on this team. Wiegel has some of the best hips in the state making it very easy for him to change directions quickly; exactly what we need from our guy covering the slot. Pair those strengths along with his other strengths of closing speed, read and reaction ability, and his ability to get his hands on the ball and create turnovers and incompletions and you end up with a player who is a must have for this team.

Safety
Hunter Wohler- Muskego, 6’1″ 190
Safety is definitely the strength of our team. Wohler is not only the best safety, he is one of the best players in the state. Some may even say THE best player, so he is a no-brainer for this team. Hunter has everything you could want in a safety. He has the range to cover the whole field as a single high safety. He makes plays on the ball in the air and knows how to dislodge the ball from the ball carrier. Wohler can fill any role on this team, but we will let him play his natural role and the role he was recruited to play at Wisconsin in 2021.
JaVaughn Byrd- Milwaukee King, 6’0″ 170
Byrd is another obvious choice for this team. He is one of the top 2021 prospects in the state and has already announced his commitment to Northern Illinois. When is comes to pure pass coverage ability, Byrd is the best safety in the state. I wouldn’t be shocked if he was able to become a successful corner along with a great safety. His range is elite, he has soft hands, and his mental processing is apparent when you watch him read what is in front of him and react to make a play. He could be the MVP of this hypothetical team in the end.
Cornerback
Clayton Bishop- Indian Trail, 6’0″ 180
Bishop is the most obvious pick on this team. He is the best corner in the state, has the prototypical build, and he lives in receivers’ hip pockets. Bishop is always in the right spot and has the long limbs that allow him to get his hands on the ball. His awareness and vision are next level too. He can read and react and then close on receivers in the blink of an eye. Clayton is at minimum a clear FCS level talent, but it wouldn’t shock me if he landed more interest from even higher levels.

Mason Buehler- Muskego, 6’1″ 185
Buehler is the perfect corner for this team. He has the great size and length needed for his position, but his best trait is his ability to bait quarterbacks into bad throws. On film, Buehler seems to always be just behind a receiver or out of position right up until the QB commits to making the throw. Then he utilizes his exceptional closing speed and is there to make a play on the ball. Buehler is a big play generator and that is exactly what we want in our secondary here!
