McDonald, Artesia’s best player and undisputed leader for the upcoming spring season, captured Offensive MVP honors for his session at the Midlands Showcase, demonstrating the skills opposing defensive backs are all too familiar with in the Land of Enchantment.
In the process, McDonald enhanced his visibility to college coaches looking for wide receivers capable of excelling at the next level.
“I felt great about last weekend’s performance,” McDonald told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “I went in there with a mindset to go all out every chance. I was able to do that and it payed off. After watching videos, I’ve seen areas of my craft that I can adjust to be more fluent in my routes. I will continue to evaluate and improve my game.”
What made the honor even more satisfying was the amount of talent on display at the camp. In short, there was no shortage of guys able to catch the football.
“I was honestly surprised because there were several great athletes out there that competed at a high level,” McDonald said.
Along with Clovis quarterback Chance Harris Chance Harris 6'0" | 195 lbs | QB Clovis | 2021 State NM , who participated in the same session, McDonald strongly believes he struck a blow for New Mexico players as they have been long overshadowed by their Texas neighbors to the east.
“I feel that all the New Mexico athletes made a statement,” McDonald said. “From my session, Chance Harris Chance Harris 6'0" | 195 lbs | QB Clovis | 2021 State NM and I proudly represented New Mexico by both earning individual awards.”
McDonald has been offered by Div. II Eastern New Mexico and NAIA Wayland Baptist University but he could be eying other opportunities as well.
“I have been in contact with two more schools and I have a visit scheduled in September depending on future COVID-19 restrictions,” said McDonald, who is training with TJ Palma during this period when school workouts are prohibited.
