But the Class of 2021 prospect has even bigger goals in mind for this coming season.
Hunter ran for 1,589 yards and scored 23 touchdowns last year for the Tigers on 213 carries, averaging 7.5 yards per attempt.
“I wanna break more rushing records and be the best running back in the state of Iowa,” Hunter said.
While carrying the load for the Grinnell offense, Hunter showed his dual-threat abilities in the passing game with 15 receptions for 236 yards and two more scores. Oh, and he also recorded 41.5 tackles with six for loss and three sacks on the defensive side of the ball.
Rumors of football being delayed in the state have surfaced in recent weeks, but Hunter believes he will be stepping on the field with his teammates this fall.
“I am 99.99 percent sure we’re going to play football,” he said. “They had baseball, so why not football?”
To stay in shape, Hunter and his teammates have been putting in the work.
“A couple of guys and I have a weight room where we go to grind six days a week,” he said. “I am really excited to go to all of these camps that I’ve been invited to. We also just started lifting together as a team and the energy level is through the roof.”
Grinnell went 6-3 last year with close losses to Pella and Adel-ADM. They also scored over 30 points in all six wins including 58 vs. Fairfield, 52 vs. South Tama and 47 vs. Mid-Prairie.
Hunter started his junior season off with a bang, rushing for 254 yards and four touchdowns vs. Mid-Prairie. He had a high of 321 with five scores against Newton and also went over 200 yards twice more (214 vs. North Polk, 221 vs. South Tama).
In all, Hunter collected seven games with over 119 yards rushing.
The six wins were the most for the Tigers since 2013 when they went 8-4.
“Having good athletes at our school and program makes us stand out,” he said. “Our program hasn’t been the best for some time and I think it made our school less recognizable.”
As for his future, Hunter has received an offer from Simpson and plans to head to camps at Wartburg and Bemidji in the future.
“I’d love to play football in college,” he said.
