Now we know the exact dates.
Football practice will begin Monday, Feb. 22 and last nine days. Season opening games will be played March 4-6. The seven-game regular season concludes the weekend of April 16-17. Eight schools in each classification will qualify for the playoffs. Quarterfinals will take place April 23-24, semifinals April 30-May 1 before the campaign wraps up May 8 with the state championship games.
“I’m ecstatic,” Clovis head coach Cal Fullerton told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “I can’t wait to see our kids strap it up in the spring.”
Based on the calendar, football will last 10 weeks.
“The NMAA has worked with its membership to create a modified calendar that will allow for all sports to be played in 2020-2021, while also limiting the overlap between each season so that students can still participate in multiple sports,” the NMAA said on its website.
The NMAA emphasized the calendar is subject to change due to the fluid situation with the pandemic.
In addition, NMAA executive director Sally Marquez said no overnight travel will be allowed. So, if the distance between two schools scheduled to compete on the gridiron is fairly substantial, they are encouraged to “meet in the middle” and play the game at a neutral site.
Marquez also encouraged schools to build their football schedules with regional or local games in mind. Fullerton said Clovis, arguably the most isolated Class 6A team in the state, would likely play its six district games against Albuquerque-based schools and one non-district contest.

Weeks 2 Through 7: March 11-April 17.
