The Wolverines return their leading rusher, passer and their top two receivers. As practices opened on Monday all four players looked like they’d advanced a year in physical development.
The Wolverines have a few prospective players that should be circled heading into the 2020 campaign.
Brock Vandagriff Brock Vandagriff 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB Prince Avenue Christian School | 2021 State GA , 6’3” 200 pounds, quarterback (Class of 2021)
Vandagriff is the top ranked quarterback in the class of 2021 in the state of Georgia. He looks like just that. Everything was crisp and the ball jumped out of his hands as it has for three years-worth of high school tape.
The noticeable difference is Vandagriff’s command. His voice is heard on a consistent basis whether he’s on the field or not. If someone makes a mistake, Vandagriff’s correction isn’t far behind. Following the correction is a quiet discussion one on one with the player.
The raw ability has been marveled at for years, but Vandagriff is really beginning to separate himself as a leader for the Wolverines.
He also looks a bit heavier than he has looked in the last few years. Vandagriff may again be asked to carry the football as he did in his sophomore season. Vandagriff was slowed by an injury in 2019.
Fans of the University of Georgia should a close eye on their future quarterback, 2020 is a big year for Vandagriff’s development.
Logan Johnson Logan Johnson 5'6" | 155 lbs | WR Prince Avenue Christian School | 2021 GA , 5’6” 140 pounds, Wide Receiver (Class of 2021)
Electric does it. Johnson is very twitchy. He’s a fun high school football player to watch on tape. He has a little bit of flair to his game as seen by a few circus catches made during practice on Tuesday. The Wolverines’ offense is tailormade for a player with his skillsets.
Johnson has good to great hands. It’s obvious that he thinks a lot about his craft. He runs routes with an understanding of what’s supposed to happen.
He then turns short passes into long exciting scores. Johnson had 18 touchdowns in 2019 in only his first season playing with the Wolverines.
Playing alongside Vandagriff, Johnson will put up huge numbers in 2020. Johnson’s size won’t be a holding back point. He’s too explosive and crafty in how he attacks defenders to not find his way onto a field on Saturdays in the future.
Zac Dyer Zac Dyer 6'1" | 180 lbs | WR Prince Avenue Christian School | 2021 GA , 6’1” 185 pounds, Wide Receiver (Class of 2021)
If Johnson is the flair, Dyer is the steady, reliable option. That’s not to say Dyer is flashy or explosive. He averaged nearly 25 yards per catch last season.
Dyer is a different type of receiver than his classmate. Dyer is more suited as an outside receiver, but he could move inside if he needed to.
He catches the football with his hands. Of course, everyone does, but he’s the prototypical hand grabber. One of the more interesting things on Dyer’s tape was how he played the football in the air.
He doesn’t stop running because the ball is typically well thrown by Vandagriff. He also reaches and attacks the ball in the air rather than allowing it to reach the body.
That’s noticeable even on screens. Dyer isn’t as twitchy as Johnson. He does possess solid size and enough speed to make an impact at the next level. It will be interesting to watch how he has added to his game and how his numbers explode in a full season of games.
Landon Owens Landon Owens 6'1" | 180 lbs | RB Prince Avenue Christian School | 2021 GA , 6’2” 200 pounds, Running Back (Class of 2021)
Owens is versatile. He ran for 1,000 yards and caught 50 passes for 612 yards. He will likely be even more of a circled man in the Wolverines’ attack in 2020.
Owens has clearly not been held back by being stuck at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Owens looked much larger than he did at the end of last season.
He looks to have added a few inches in height and put on some muscle. That’s important for him because as a versatile back, he’s added even more to his versatility with the added size.
Owens could be leaned on more between the tackles and in short yardage in 2020. The extra size also gives him an opportunity to showcase his blocking ability.
Another year of big numbers and improved little tricks of the running back trade will have Owens on a ton of radars by the end of the season.
Davis Ridings, 6’1” 210 pounds, Linebacker (Class of 2021)
Ridings is a football magnet. He’s always around the football. He’s a smart football player. His father is the Wolverines’ defensive coordinator.
He plays hard and he tackles with authority. Along with being around the football a lot, comes the ability to take the football away. Over the last two seasons, many of the big defensive turnovers that the Wolverines have forced have come with Ridings holding the opposing team’s football.
Ridings’ stock is likely to rise after another productive season.
