Get to Know Will Dampier
Dampier was a member of the Champlin Park Rebels state championship runner ups from last year, after the 2018 season that the Rebels took a surprisingly early exit to Lakeville South. When you watch Dampier on film, you learn quite quickly that he is the “flyer” type of a defensive back that will come in quick to make the key tackle in the backfield or wherever the football is on the play. At 5’9, Dampier runs in the 4.5 range as far as his 40-yard dash. Dampier also played some tailback as a junior for the Rebels, which is why he can be an effective kick and punt returner for your program because he only gets faster when his pedal is hitting the floor.
Dampier’s Focus
Dampier praises his footwork as he actively enjoys doing cone drills, focusing on his brakes, and overall making sure his feet are in the game 100% correctly. Dampier has been working every day this offseason training on his footwork to get better for his positions of defensive back, kick return, and punt return.
College Interest
Dampier originally was going to take his talents to the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, North Dakota just over the Minnesota border, however after the Minnesota College Athletic Conference made the very early decision to cancel their 2020 season, he decided to de-commit from the program, putting him back “on the radar” for a new football opportunity in 2020 wherever that may be.
Elevator Pitch
Dampier’s elevator pitch to the college coaches listening, as he had this to say to PrepRedzone.com about what he can bring to your program:
I’ll bring a positive attitude, a hard worker, I will play any position you need me to play defensively, special teams, anything you need!
2020 Work Ons
When Dampier left Champlin Park, the biggest thing the coaches told him to work on was to keep plugging away at his footwork, and getting in the weight room the most often he can. Dampier plays at about 5’9 160 pounds but has some solid ballhawk tendencies that I have seen on film and in person that make him 100% ready to play at the next level.
Will’s Mentors
“Mom and dad always told me you have to work hard to be the best,” Dampier said about his life mentors in his mom and dad. Dampier emphasized it’s about “working harder than everybody else”, which is great advice he got from his father.
2020 Goals
“Get settled in and do my years of college,” as Dampier waits for any new playing opportunities there are for him the year 2020.
