The quarterbacks and skill players get all the hype when things are going well, but it’s the linemen who do the dirty work in the trenches. With more and more offenses in the peach state moving to a spread style of play, linemen are becoming more athletic and need to be capable of protecting the passer. Here we highlight a few under the radar offensive linemen who could have breakout seasons this fall.
Caleb Cook Caleb Cook 6'3" | 290 lbs | OL Brunswick | 2021 State GA – Brunswick – Class of 2021
The 6-foot-3 280-pounder is one of the top offensive linemen in the southeast region of Georgia with good size and mobility. He moves well for his size and just does his job each and play. He’s strong, he can pull around from his tackle spot, and he knows how to find linebackers at the next level. He’s an excellent run blocker and shows really good balance on film. He gets overshadowed a little by 2022 teammate Kanaya Charlton, but Cook’s film speaks for itself. There’s a lot to like about his game. He has a 3.9 GPA and a 27 ACT. Cook recently committed to Georgia Southern, but other top schools have shown interest and could pull the trigger late in the process.
Mo Clipper – Milton – 2022
The Milton Eagles produced one of the top 2020 offensive line prospects in the country last year in Clemson signee Paul Tchio, and the Eagles may have another big-time offensive lineman in 2022 guard Mo Clipper Jr. He has the frame, but he also knows how to control and use it. He’s extremely athletic for his size which allows him to give opposing linemen trouble. He’s also a problem for second-level defenders because of his ability to move so well laterally. This is also shown on the basketball court. His biggest attribute is his mental capacity for the game. The 6-foot-5 250-pounder was Tchio’s backup last season, so the film on is Clipper is limited, but it’s clear the Milton staff is high on him and have big plans for his future. He’s a guy who could see his recruitment take off after a full solid season this fall.
Jacob Smith – Paulding County- Class of 2022
When you think of Paulding County right now, you think of 5-star linebacker, Smael Mondon Smael Mondon 6'3" | 210 lbs | LB Paulding County | 2021 State GA . Paulding County isn’t one to turn out recruits on a yearly basis, but they have Mondon this year, and they’ve got Smith, an upcoming junior with good size at just under 6-foot-3 and 300-pounds. He’s a nasty lineman on film who has the chance to turn into a nice prospect. He plays mean, has strong hands, and has a good initial punch. One source at Paulding County called Smith, “the next Tate Ratledge”. He may not have the height and length of Ratledge, but Smith plays with that toughness and aggressiveness that made Ratledge one of the top 2020 offensive line prospects in the country. He’s coming off an injury that held him out of all-star games in December, but sources say once he’s heathy again, Smith could see some offers start to come his way.
Amir Johnson – Westlake – Class of 2022
Another rising star from east Atlanta, Johnson is a good-looking center/guard prospect at 6-foot-3 275-pounds with good mobility. He’ll need to keep getting stronger, but he’s got a good base and shows good lower body strength as well. He’ll need to continue to work on his footwork and overall fundamentals, but he got some major playing time as a sophomore at multiple offensive line positions for a talented Westlake team. He has a chance to really break out this fall as a junior.
