Under The Radar Pinellas County Safeties
With the 2020 season inching closer, I wanted to go spotlight some Safeties that are under the radar in Pinellas County. It is important that we highlight as many prospects as possible. These players are all talented and have college football level ability. Some of these players have a few offers and with the help of big senior seasons, I envision all of them playing college football at some level.
Ryan Cunningham– East Lake
5’10 190lbs
Cunningham is a pure football player in every sense of the word, he lines up at safety and running back, and plays those positions at a high level. He registered 66 tackles, 4 Int, and had 54 carries for 478 yds 4 tds last season. As a player, Cunningham comes to balance versus the run and hits bigger than his size. He has tremendous acceleration to the ball and explodes through his tackles. He has good ball skills and body control to make diving plays on the ball. Also shows the ability in coverage to track the ball and make a play on it as evident by the 4 ints last season. Ryan currently has one offer from Winona State.

Demetrius Garland Jr.- Clearwater High
6’0 203lbs
Garland finished 2019 with 53 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 pass deflected. He’s built like a linebacker and plays like one. He is a natural hunter in the run game, hits like a linebacker, and drives through the ball carrier. Plays close to the box and shows tremendous hustle chasing plays down. Shows good awareness in coverage and always seems to be in the right spot. Demetrius, currently has offers from Notre Dame College (Ohio), UAB, and Keiser University.

Aumhryaun Brown- Lakewood
5’11 180lbs
When I watch Brown play, I immediately think of Xavier McKinney who played at the University of Alabama. Lakewood uses him a lot the way Alabama used McKinney, they bring him from all over the place on blitzes from his safety spot, and despite his size, he’s a very physical tackler. He showed several times on film the ability to slip blocks at the line of scrimmage and make the tackle. He registered 99 tackles, 9 sacks, and 1 fumble recovery. He also made 4A 1st team All-State. He shows a lot of versatility and can line up at multiple positions in the secondary. Players like him are at a premium with the spread offenses and most defenses having to play nickel most of the time.

Brion Scales- St Petersburg High
6’3 180lbs
Scales is a name you’re going to hear about a lot this year. He has a prototypical D-1 size for the free safety position. He finished 2019 with 37 tackles, 3 ints, and 1 fumble recovery. When I’m watching the film on scales he immediately shows the ability to read the eyes of the quarterback and make plays on the ball. He is a true Centerfield free safety, but he also has the ability to come up and play the run. Very smart player who knows his responsibilities and doesn’t seem to be caught out of position very often by eye candy. He’s also a physical run defender and St. Pete will walk him down in the box for run support. Brion scales is one of the best free safeties on seeing in the Tampa Bay area. Currently holds two offers from Warner and Albright. I have zero doubts with another strong season this year he will have several D-1 offers.
