There were quite a few freshman who made an instant impact last year, and this list includes a few who are bound for breakout seasons this fall in year two.
David Mbadinga David Mbadinga 5'8" | 195 lbs | RB North Cobb | 2023 State GA – Kell – Running Back
The 5-foot-8 170-pound back has all the makings of a possible five-star prospect down the road. Becoming the starting running back and a key figure in Kell’s offense as a freshman, Mbadinga helped lead the Longhorns to an 9-3 season last fall. As a back, Mbadinga shows great vision, good speed, and brings some shiftiness to his game. He changes directions well and while he’s a patient runner, he shows good burst when needed. He can break tackles, he moves the pile forward, and he’s a reliable weapon as a receiver. He doesn’t have elite top-end speed, but he’s fast enough to break off a long run and take it the distance when given the opportunity. Again, he’s only a freshman. He’ll only get faster and stronger in the coming years. As a freshman, Mbadinga carried the ball 193 times for 1,318 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also caught 14 passes for 276 yards and two scores.
Jaevon Miller- Creekside – Outside Linebacker
An impressive outside linebacker to know is Creekside (GA) star, Javeon Miller. The 6-foot-0 208-pounder started 5 games last season as a freshman, racking up 6 sacks and forcing 4 fumbles. The staff at Creekside believes he’s bound for a monster sophomore season now that he’s a full-time starter. The SEC interest isn’t there just yet, but it should be soon. Right now, both Georgia Tech and Kansas have shown early interest. Miller has good size for his age, he shows good instincts, and finds a way to make a play on the football. He’s got active hands, he tackles well, and has the potential to become a top prospect in Georgia in the 2023 class.
Madden Sanker Madden Sanker 6'4" | 275 lbs | OL South Paulding | 2023 State GA – South Paulding – Offensive Line
One of the top young offensive line players in the state last year had to be the big tackle from South Paulding. Madden Sanker Madden Sanker 6'4" | 275 lbs | OL South Paulding | 2023 State GA has a long, lean build and will continue to get bigger and stronger over the next few years. He plays with a balanced base and moves really well for guy at 6-foot-4 265-pounds. The toughness is there for a young kid, and he showed how athletic he is on film. Sanker played well at a position that is tough to play for just a high school freshman. The Douglasville native has the size, athleticism, and toughness to become a top prospect nationally in the 2023 class. Sanker is a prospect full of potential who should improve both from both a fundamental, and physical standpoint over the next few years.
Christian Towns – Taylor County- Defensive Line
If you’re looking for a young defensive lineman to know, Taylor County lineman Christian Towns is your guy. The big 6-foot-2 320-pounder started as a freshman in 2019 and sources say he has SEC-potential down the road. His size puts him at the D1 level already and he will only get bigger these next 3 years. He busts his butt in the weight room and went up tremendously on every lift throughout the year. He was really trying to transition from middle school ball to varsity so it took him so time to realize he could play with his older teammates. He might be on the heavy side this second, but he’ll continue to get better as long as he transforms his body and works hard in the weight room. He’s tough for any offensive lineman to handle due to his size and can really close those gaps and running lanes. Look for Towns to have a big sophomore season and make a name for himself after a solid 2020 season.
