Here are a few games and players to watch out for as the 2020 football season kicks off for the first time – for these teams.
The 2nd Edition will most involve small schools aside from Lewis Central.
Class A Council Bluffs St. Albert @ 3A Lewis Central
Again, two schools that are ranked in their respective Class in most polls that have been released. You also don’t usually get this much of a spread between Class.
Players to watch for –
Thomas Fidone Thomas Fidone 6'5" | 225 lbs | TE Lewis Central | 2021 State IA , Lewis Central – All eyes will be on the number 1 player in the state all season, but sorry colleges; he’s off the board. The senior just recently announced he’d be playing college football for Nebraska next season.
Connor Cerny, St. Albert – Ran for over 400 yards and seven touchdowns last season. He threw for 40 yards on five passes. With the previous year’s QB, Lance Wright lost to graduation, Cerny will be looked at to produce a lot of offense this season.
Class 1A Osage vs. Class A St. Ansgar
Another Cross-County rivalry in Northern Iowa tonight
Players to watch –
Ryan Cole Ryan Cole 5'10" | 185 lbs | RB St. Ansgar | 2021 IA , Saint Ansgar – The senior ran for 1,143 and 20 touchdowns last year. The highly-rated saints will be without a 2,000-yard rusher from last season, putting more pressure on cole. He also caught eight passes for over 150 yards and two touchdowns.
Elijah Soltero, Saint Ansgar – Elijah will be needed on both sides of the ball for the Saints tonight. He will be counted on to create holes on offense and close them on defense. He currently holds offers from The University of Wisconsin-River-Falls and Simpson.
Colin Muller, Osage – A 2,000-yard passer as a junior Osage will need a big year from the junior to make a run come postseason. He threw 24 touchdowns and scrambled for 124 yards from the pocket.
Nathan Havel, Osage – The junior will help to fill the gap of lost receiver Thor Maakestad who caught 11 touchdowns and over 700 yards last season. Havel is an athlete and will help on defense, running the ball, and can play quarterback.
A Grundy Center vs. 1A Panorama
This might be one of the best games of the night. Both teams have championship mindsets.
Players to watch –
Logan Knaack, Grundy Center – is an explosive dual-threat player that will have looks at the next level. Last year, he passed for 1,334 yards and 12 touchdowns and ran for 839 yards and 18 more.
Zach Opheim, Grundy Center – When Knaack isn’t taking off, the senior Opheim will. He rushed for 1,461 yards and 18 touchdowns last season.
Wesley Willis, Grundy center – a top lineman in the Class of 2021, currently holding many offers, including Grand View, Northern State, Graceland, and Dordt.
Domonic Walker, Panorama – returns after throwing for 1,313 yards, 11 touchdowns, and just four interceptions. He also scrambled for 334 yards and eight touchdowns on the year. Walker may not be a guy to pick up big yardage with his legs but can use them not to take a sack and punch it in near the endzone.
Jared Wasson, Panorama – Is also a PrepRed Zone Preseason All-State honorable mention selection. He and his fellow lineman will need to give Walker time and open holes for the rest of the team.
