Melrose’s rising senior Devon Bailey, though, is different.
If you’ve never heard of Bailey, watch his film. The 6-foot-5, 185-pound Bailey towers over his opponents. He’s fast, elusive and strong as he makes play after play all over the field for the Buffaloes. On any given play, he’ll line up at running back, wide receiver or tight end, a testament to his versatility.
Bailey is a key reason Melrose captured the 2019 8-man state football championship last November.
Division II Eastern New Mexico has heard of Bailey, for sure. The Greyhounds are the first school to offer Bailey, who lives 35 miles northwest of Portales where the ENMU campus is located. Head coach Kelley Lee extended the offer in mid-July during a phone conversation with Bailey.
“I was pretty excited about getting the offer from ENMU because my dreams are starting to unfold before my eyes,” Bailey told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “They said they have had good luck with small school kids and they are going to take the chance on me because I work hard.”
Bailey’s next offer could come from New Mexico. Lobo coaches have had a few discussions with Bailey as they perform their due diligence on him, along with Nevada. UNM has also directed several tweets at Bailey, the first coming in late May.
“UNM has expressed some interest during recruiting,” Bailey said. “I haven’t had a lot of conversations with UNM but every word counts in my book. Nevada has asked for film and they have my grades. They’ve got me in their system.”
