The growing popularity of camps, showcases, 7on7, and personalized training usually gives athletes the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of college coaches and scouts. Due to current Covid19 restrictions canceling most of these events, the recruiting landscape has changed and limited the exposure opportunities for prospects trying to lock down that coveted first offer. Here’s a list of the top players that likely would have benefited from college camps and showcases this offseason and are still searching for that first offer.
Austin Kolb, QB, 6’5 205 lbs., Desert Ridge
Kolb had a big junior season where he threw for 3,000 yards, 23 touchdowns, and had a 105 QB rating while leading Desert Ridge to the quarterfinals of the 6A playoffs. He has the ideal size and frame for a college QB at 6’5 205 lbs. with plus arm strength. Love his pocket presence and ability to stand tall with a well-balanced base that allows him to go through his progression and get the ball out quickly under pressure. Throws a very catchable ball with great touch on vertical routes and is capable of throwing at all three levels with accuracy. He’s a guy that would’ve benefited from college camps and showcases this offseason where he would’ve likely secured his first offer but college coaches won’t be able to look past his size and ability for much longer.
Dane Christensen, QB, 6’3 185 lbs., Casteel HS
Another QB that had a breakout junior season and recruiting would’ve been boosted from being able to showcase his skillset at college camps this offseason. He threw for over 3,100 yards with 30 touchdowns while completing 73% of his passes and ran for another 9 touchdowns in 2019. He’s got a lean frame with good length that allows him to sling it all over the field and at different arm angles. Christensen is a good athlete that shows good pocket awareness and mobility when avoiding pressure and also isn’t afraid to tuck it and make a play with his legs. He’s a D1 guy that that should see his stock rising this season.
Jonah Wright, OL, 6’7 285 lbs., Peoria HS
Wright is still relatively new to the game after only playing three seasons, but his upside and potential are undeniable. He immediately passes the eye test with his elite size and frame at 6’7 285 lbs. Also possesses athleticism and flexibility rarely seen at his size. Shows he can move down the line laterally and be an effective blocker at the second level when pulling. His best football is ahead of him and he has just scratched the surface of his potential. With his size and a little technique improvement and development, it would be surprising if a D1 school didn’t take a chance on him.
Evan Lovett, ATH, 6’0 200 lbs., Pusch Ridge Christian Academy
A dual-sport athlete that excels as a running back but also has the ability to play on the defensive side of the ball at the college level. He’s a gifted natural athlete that has great upside and potential. As a running back he shows a good combination of power and speed. He has the ability to make defenders miss in the open field using his change of direction and acceleration but also shows he can be a downhill runner with power. Displays good vision and patience allowing the play to develop and finding space based on his blocks. He’s ran for over 2,000 yards and 31 touchdowns in his career and should continue to put up big numbers in the 2020 season.
Mason Davies, ATH, 6’1 180 lbs., Saguaro HS
Davies is a speedster with the versatility to play on either side of the ball at the next level. He was on the state championship 4×100 relay team last year and is part of the Saguaro program known for developing their players for the college level. He’s a good natural athlete that can make explosive plays with the ball in his hands and does a lot of things well, including blocking on the outside. Hasn’t had a ton of opportunities to show his talents but with a big senior season in one of the most recognized programs nationally he should catch the attention of college coaches.
