But as college coaches aim to get any advantage they can in the recruitment of top players across the nation, it has become a race to see who will be the first to offer the next five-star prospect. This has led to more freshmen and sometimes even eighth-graders pull in big-time offers than ever before. Here’s a deeper look at the future of Arizona high school football with five incoming sophomores in the 2023 class that have already secured Power 5 offers.
Cole Martin, DB, 5’10” 175 lbs., Hamilton HS
Recruiting has skyrocketed in the offseason collecting his first Power 5 offer from Texas in the middle of May and has since pulled in eight more Power 5 offers from top programs including USC, LSU, Texas A&M, Oregon, and Michigan State. He shows good quickness, speed, and versatility with the ability to play press-man or zone coverage. Displays great change of direction and fluidity flipping his hips and transitioning out of his backpedal. Colleges will like his natural instincts, ball skills, and acceleration that allows him to close space quickly and make plays on the ball. Decent size right now at 5’10 175 lbs. but has long arms and plenty of time to grow. Martin will continue to collect big time offers and will be one of the top recruits in the 2023 class.
Cole Shivers, DB, 5’10” 160 lbs., Saguaro HS
Transferred to Saguaro from Red Mountain, where he is ready to learn from four-star athlete Denzel Burke and be the next big-time DB recruit in a long line of studs out of Saguaro. Started on varsity as a freshman where he displayed great natural ability and anticipation at the corner spot. Showed his versatility making plays in both man and zone coverages. Florida State was the first Power 5 to offer in April but with all the tools and natural ability he possesses other top programs shouldn’t be far behind once he can showcase his skill set.
Duce Robinson, TE, 6’6” 230 lbs., Pinnacle HS
Robinson is a great combination of size and athleticism at 6’6” 230 lbs. and received his first Power 5 offer from ASU before even playing a down of tackle football. He’s a gifted athlete with good hands and shows great body control and hand-eye coordination for his size and age. He’s a three-sport athlete that has the possibility of being a highly recruited baseball player as well following in his father’s footsteps who played baseball and football at Florida State. Was off to a strong start to the 2019 season before an injury held him out, he has great upside and it shouldn’t be long before more Power 5 programs take notice of his size and raw athleticism once he gets some game experience.
Porter Reynolds, LB, 6’0” 225 lbs., Queen Creek HS
Started every game as a freshman next to his brother, Trey, who is committed to Utah and one of the top linebackers in the 2021 class. He’s extremely strong and physical at the POA and consistently overpowered much larger opponents all last season. Fast and relentless in pursuit he closes space quickly and makes plays sideline to sideline. He’s a sure tackler in the open field that is violent and aggressive with the ability to create turnovers. Porter picked up two PAC12 offers on the same day from Washington State and Colorado and will be one of the top LB prospects in the 2023 class.
Jordan Gile, ATH, 5’10” 160 lbs., Chandler HS
Gile received his first Power 5 offer before entering high school from Kansas. He’s a great athlete that has the versatility and athleticism to play multiple positions at the next level including QB and RB. It will be interesting to see how he is utilized this year on a loaded Chandler roster, including D1 QB Mikey Keene. One to watch as he grows and matures over the next few years in a program that is great at developing their players for the next level.
