With that said, we are going to take a look at the top skill position players from as many districts as possible in the state before fall camps begin.
Some of these players are already receiving college interest, while others are looking to catch the eye of that right coach.
Trae Klatt – Anamosa
A sure-handed target in the Anamosa offense is Class of 2021 receiver Trae Klatt.
Klatt is coming off a 34-reception junior campaign that saw him score five touchdowns and record 361 yards, averaging 10.6 per catch. He also had a handful of carries out of the backfield.
On defense, Klatt made 41.5 tackles with two interceptions.
Jordan Lawrence – Camanche
Last year, Jordan Lawrence shared time at quarterback with Caleb Delzell, completing 45 of 90 passes for 673 yards and five touchdowns.
With Delzell, graduating, the position should be all his.
Lawrence, who averaged 15 yards per completion, also ran for 167 yards and two scores on the ground.
Kannon Coakley – Maquoketa
A perfect name for a dual-threat quarterback, Maquoketa’s Kannon Coakley gained plenty of experience directing the offense a year ago.
Coakley completed 93 of 177 for 1,072 yards with nine touchdowns, adding a team-high 605 yards and seven scores on the ground. He averaged 11.5 yards per completion and over four yards per rush.
Coakley also handled punting duties, averaging 34 yards on his 36 attempts for the Cardinals, who went 4-5.
Justin Recker – Monticello
Monticello might need a new quarterback, but that person will have a big group of targets to work with in the fall.
Included in the group is Class of 2021’s Justin Recker, who caught 42 passes for 618 yards and seven scores. All three of those numbers ranked second on the team behind Devin Kraus, who has graduated.
Recker also made 10 solo tackles on defense and picked off two passes.
Payten Elijah – Tipton
It will be interesting to see what Tipton does with those returning from last year.
Class of 2021’s Payten Elijah saw action at quarterback as a junior, completing 6 of 14 passes for 70 yards with a touchdown. He also flashed his abilities on the ground, running for 225 yards and four scores.
With over 2,000 yards of offense graduating, the Tigers will need players to produce.
Elijah also caught eight passes for 93 yards and a score while making 36.5 tackles on defense with seven interceptions. He averaged almost nine yards per punt return and 38 yards per punt on special teams.
Kobe Simon Kobe Simon 6'3" | 220 lbs | TE West Liberty | 2021 IA – West Liberty
The West Liberty offense was all Will Esmoil last year, but with him moving on, you could see more balance this season.
Look for wide receiver Kobe Simon Kobe Simon 6'3" | 220 lbs | TE West Liberty | 2021 IA to be a big part of that.
Simon, a Class of 2021 prospect, caught 20 passes for 309 yards and two scores last year. He posted 15.5 yards per catch and also made 61.5 tackles on defense.
Of those stops, 15 were for loss with seven sacks.
