With that said, we are going to take a look at the top skill position players from as many districts as possible in the state before fall camps begin.
Some of these players are already receiving college interest, while others are looking to catch the eye of that right coach.
Keegan Koppedryer – Center Point-Urbana
Keegan Koppedryer worked with several now-graduated receivers a year ago to throw for 1,251 yards. The Center Point-Urbana coaches will need to find him some new targets this season.
Koppedryer completed 103 of 224 with four touchdowns, but did throw 13 interceptions. He averaged over 12 yards per completion for the Stormin’ Pointers, who went 4-5 including a win in the season finale.
Brady Ketchum Brady Ketchum 5'10" | 190 lbs | QB Mount Vernon | 2021 IA – Mount Vernon
Mount Vernon gained plenty of confidence at the end of last season, reeling off back-to-back victories over West Burlington and Louisa-Muscatine to finish 4-5 overall.
Quarterback Brady Ketchum Brady Ketchum 5'10" | 190 lbs | QB Mount Vernon | 2021 IA returns after throwing for 1,381 yards and 11 scores last year. He completed 125 of 198 for a rating of 121.7.
Ketchum also handled some of the punting duties, averaging almost 37 yards per punt.
Payton Vest – South Tama
South Tama’s Payton Vest nearly surpassed 1,000 yards from scrimmage on offense last year, leading the team with 598 yards on the ground.
Vest averaged almost four yards per attempt, scoring all six of South Tama’s rushing touchdowns. He also hauled in 16 passes for 261 yards and two scores, posting 16 yards per catch.
On defense, Vest had 43 tackles including 40 solo stops and five tackles for loss. He returned two kickoffs for touchdowns and averaged 23 yards per kickoff return.
Brandon Tompkins – Union
As an upperclassman, Brandon Tompkins found his groove on the football field for Union.
Tompkins passed for 603 yards and ran for another 251 last year, leading the Knights to wins in two of their last four games. He completed 56 of 109 with four TDs, but will be without leading rusher Brayden Grosse this year.
Brooks Erickson – Vinton-Shellsburg
Vinton-Shellsburg’s Brooks Erickson showed his dual-threat abilities last year, passing for almost 900 yards and running for almost 500 more.
Erickson completed 63 of 146 for 897 yards with nine touchdowns, averaging over 14 yards per completion. On the ground, he had 488 yards with six scores.
Not to just be a one-way player, Erickson also made 28.5 tackles with four forced turnovers.
