With that said, we are going to take a look at the top skill position players from as many districts as possible in the state before fall camps begin.
Some of these players are already receiving college interest, while others are looking to catch the eye of that right coach.
Colin Mullenix – Atlantic
Atlantic was a run-first, run-second team a year ago, but with the graduation of Tyler Moen, maybe the Trojans take to the air more in 2020.
If they do, Colin Mullenix will be a big reason why. The Class of 2021 receiver caught 11 passes for 270 yards and five touchdowns last year, averaging 24.5 yards per reception.
On defense, he recorded 42.5 tackles with 39 being solo stops while also averaging almost 21 yards on 20 kickoffs.
Michael Shull – Clarinda
Being able to take off from the quarterback position has become so important over the past several years. Clarinda’s Michael Shull showed he is a dual-threat last year under center.
Shull completed 26 passes for 365 yards with three touchdowns, averaging 14 yards per completion. On the ground, he ran for 357 yards and a team-high nine touchdowns.
Shull also played defense, making 23.5 tackles with 18 solo stops and two tackles for loss. He picked off three passes, as well.
Andrew Johnson – Des Moines Christian
In 2019, the Des Moines Christian offense had no trouble moving the ball, throwing for over 1,800 yards and rushing for almost 2,000.
However, graduation takes much of that production which means Class of 2021’s Andrew Johnson could be the leader of the new group.
Johnson completed 7 of 16 passes for 54 yards with two touchdowns last year, adding another 132 yards and a score with his legs.
He also handled the punting duties, putting together a season in which he averaged almost 38 yards per kick.
Jaxon Warnke – Greene County
Last year, Greene County had a 1,000-yard receiver and two more go over 400 yards receiving. Those three have all graduated, leaving Jaxon Warnke as the experienced member of the group.
Warnke caught 19 passes for 226 yards and four scores as a junior, averaging almost 12 yards per catch. He also had a rushing touchdown and picked off a pass on defense.
