Now, the Class of 2021 running back prospect is ready to get back to work with his teammates after an extended break due to the coronavirus.
O’Brien-Green carried the ball 150 times last year for 1,015 yards with 10 touchdowns, averaging almost seven yards an attempt. He also caught six passes for another 58 yards as the Lions went 10-1 and advanced to the Class 2A state quarterfinals.
“We were limited to Zoom calls for months,” O’Brien-Green said. “So it’s very exciting that camp is getting started up soon and we’re getting back to football.”
To stay in shape during the time, O’Brien-Green worked out at a local gym that is ran by his father.
In a win over Waverly-Shell Rock, O’Brien-Green recorded 143 yards and a score. He also helped Clear Lake pull out a 28-27 victory over Garner-Hayfield/Ventura by running for 116 yards and a touchdown.
O’Brien-Green had his biggest game of the year in a convincing win over Mason City, carrying the ball 15 times for 225 yards and three scores. He also hit the 100-yard mark in a victory vs. Forest City.
As a sophomore, O’Brien-Green ran for a team-leading 940 yards on 112 carries, scoring 14 touchdowns.
He has received interested from South Dakota State, Iowa Western and several Div. II schools so far.
“It’s been good,” O’Brien-Green said of his recruiting process. “I went on a visit to SDSU before the pandemic started up and I’ve been in contact with a few more FCS schools. I also have been in contact with Iowa Western and some D2 schools.”
While running back is his home, O’Brien-Green said he might see some time on the other side of the ball this season.
“I’m planning on playing running back and possibly some outside linebacker,” he said. “Iowa has always been a school I’d love to play for.”
O’Brien-Green joined the Clear Lake program as a sophomore, but has already fallen in love with the passion of the school.
“It means a lot playing for Clear Lake,” he said. “It’s been a great experience.”
