This can be found to be true at all levels of play, especially as players look to set themselves apart and to give themselves a chance to play at higher levels. Statistics have also been proven to favor those of a bigger stature. While this proves to be a fact for all of the primary positions in football, some players manage to become an exception. While there have been player’s such as Calvin Johnson, Julio Jones, and Michael Thomas, who are dominant WR’s with the prototypical height, length, and frame, there have also been other players, such as Wes Welker, Desean Jackson, and Steve Smith Steve Smith 5'11" | 177 lbs | DB Mercyhurst Prep School | 2021 PA , who have seen a large amount of success as undersized players. We have found that being undersized, should not mean that you should be overlooked. Some players play above their frame and height, thus proving the idea that “heart over height” is something to be taken seriously. We have listed a few 2021 WR prospects in the state of Georgia who we feel display this kind of drive.
Jairus Mace- 5’10 170- Clarke Central
As a junior, Jairus Mace totaled 1,241 receiving yards, with 19 touchdowns. His stats alone show that he plays above his size. Mace displays very good straight line speed, with a good stride, and he also has the ability to finish plays. Mace can take the top off of a defense easily and he shows that he can catch the ball with strong hands, while also being able to track the ball well with his eyes. His twitch also proves to help him to gain yards after the catch and to even turn them into 6 points. One thing we want to see Mace do more of is to run more polished routes, and to display his ability to change direction. We believe that the ability is there, and we have no doubt that he will continue to work on these things and be able to excel for his team.
Jamal Haynes Jamal Haynes 5'9" | 170 lbs | WR Grayson | 2021 State GA – 5’9 170- Grayson
Jamal Haynes Jamal Haynes 5'9" | 170 lbs | WR Grayson | 2021 State GA is another receiver who plays bigger than his size. While he is listed at 5’9, and 170 pounds, he has proven to be effective for the Grayson football team. With the ball in his hands, Haynes finishes plays, and constantly puts his team in a good position. He stacks defenders very well with his routes, and he displays a burst of speed that helps him to separate from defensive backs. With this, Haynes also tracks the ball well, and even shows this ability as a return man during special teams. It’s this versatility that shows us that he plays above his size. As he continues to develop, we would like to see him work on eliminating the false steps as he comes off of the line, and the choppiness in his route running at times. If he works on these things, and allows his twitch and feet to assist him in his route running, we would not be shocked if he added more offers in his senior year.
Logan Johnson Logan Johnson 5'6" | 155 lbs | WR Prince Avenue Christian School | 2021 GA – 5’6 155- Prince Avenue Christian School
Most people will not know who Logan Johnson Logan Johnson 5'6" | 155 lbs | WR Prince Avenue Christian School | 2021 GA is until they read this, but will be amazed after discovering him. When you turn on the film, there is an obvious size difference between Johnson, and the other competitors, but he does not let this stop him from showing out. In fact, Johnson has proven to be a dominant force for Prince Avenue Christian School. In his junior season, Johnson totaled 1,621 yards, and 18 touchdowns. Hi talent is evident when you watch him play, as he allows his size, speed, and ability to be slippery to assist him in every aspect of his game. Johnson displays the ability to separate himself from defenders very easily, while also being able to change direction very effectively. When watching his highlights, you may be convinced that he will almost score every play. It is because of this that we feel he plays with heart, and does not let his size get the best of him. While colleges may be weary of his height and frame, we believe that it should not slow Johnson down from continuing to do what he does best, which is to dominate his competition.
