They’ve seen winning seasons aplenty, a couple of state final games, and have sent a bevy of players to Division 1 and power 5 schools over the last 20 years.
As a grad, long time teacher, and coach Roosevelt Mukes Jr. knew when he took the job of head football coach at Wayne, just what kind of lofty expectations he and his program would face. Even the most veteran of coaches will tell you that sometimes you have to take your lumps to reach your future goals and with a 3-7 record in 2019 they took their fair share of lumps. With a schedule that would make the most confident of men queasy, Wayne faced 5 teams on their schedule that at season’s end would produce 54 wins, a regional final, and a state championship. With the exception of one of those games, a game that came against a very strong Springfield team, the Warriors were in every game.
Now that we’ve established the incredible strength of schedule the Warriors faced lets add into that the fact that the team was largely led by Sophomore and Juniors who were experiencing varsity football for the first time. Going 3-7 with a young talented team and hanging with the some of the best teams the State of Ohio has to offer is no small feat. Today we a take a look Wayne’s 2021 and 2022 classes.
2021 Class
Cam Fancher Cam Fancher 6'2" | 180 lbs | QB Wayne | 2021 State OH 6’2 180lb ATH– Fancher has played WR/DB/QB at Wayne. Last season, his first as a HS quarterback, the lefty threw for almost 2,000 yards while rushing for more than 600 yards. Fancher is going to stand in the pocket and go through his progressions, but has the ability to escape and make plays out of structure when necessary. While Fancher could easily play wide receiver or defensive back at the college level he does have a ton of untapped potential at QB due to his relative inexperience at the position. Cam has already been offered by Fordham, Eastern ILL., EKU, Georgia State among others. A strong season could catapult him into the conversation of more mid majors or small power 5 schools.
Austin Mullins 5’10 170lb- Austin Mullins projects to a slot wr in a spread offense. Coach Mukes calls Mullins him a “Julian Edelman type”. With good speed Mullins is a precise route runner who’s a dependable target who can gain yardage after the catch. Don’t questions this young man’s functional strength or scrappiness as he was a state qualifier at the D1 level for wrestling. With a strong senior season Mullins should draw interest from D2 and Mid-majors.
Jaden Hurd 5’11 190lb- Project to the safety position at the next level. Hurd has the versatility to play either safety position, but is probably best suited for the strong safety position. When you watch the film you see a high energy player who loves to fly around and find the ball. His game screams competitor. Right now Hurd has both D2 and FCS offers, but with a strong senior season I really think he could prove he has the ability to compete at D1 level.
Deandre Ham 5’10 160- Ham projects to a slot corner in a zone scheme at the next level. Ham shows good hips, solid acceleration, and plays with good anticipation. Ham has received some small school interest and probably looks to fit best at the D2 or D3 level.
Brendan Hill 6’4 180lb WR- Hill projects as an outside possession receiver at the next level. He shows solid route running ability, good hands, and is a willing blocker. Hill would be a nice target for a D2 or D3 school looking to add size at the wr position or could slide down to tight end if he were add weight and strength.
2022 Class
Elijah Brown Elijah Brown 6'5" | 235 lbs | TE Wayne | 2022 State OH – The first thing that you notice when watching Brown is his freakish athleticism. He runs and catches like a wr and yet stands 6’5 and 230 pounds. Elijah plays the game like a basketball player. Brown projects to tight end at the college level and he’ll easily put on a lean 15-20 pounds once he gets in a D1 weight training and nutrition program. I’d be very interested to see more film of Brown on Defense because he has the athleticism to be a high level OLB or DE at the college level as well. Brown has a very impressive list of Power 5 offers already including Arizona St., USC, Penn St., Michigan St., Pitt, WVU, Purdue, Georgia Tech & Cincinnati & Indiana just to name a few, and is drawing tremendous interest from places like OSU, and Notre Dame. He’s been invited to participate in the Under Armour All American Elite Underclassmen camp.
Aamil Wagner Aamil Wagner 6'6" | 250 lbs | OL Wayne | 2022 State OH 6’6 240- Wagner is one of the top offensive line prospects the state of Ohio has to offer in any class. When you turn on the film it’s Wagner’s outstanding combination of size, athleticism, and footwork that jumps off the screen and is also why he has the potential to be an elite left tackle. He’s a play through the whistle guy who loves to finish his defenders. With Wagner’s athleticism it’s no surprise that he does an excellent job of both kick stepping in his drop in pass protection, while also helping him in getting to the second level of the defense and clearing the way in the run game. Due to Wagner’s size, strength, athleticism he’s totally scheme diverse. There’s no pigeon holing him into one kind of scheme. Aamil has offers from the likes of Oregon, Arizona St., Nebraska, UK, Pitt, Cincinnati, among others. If he continues to fill out and add strength he’s a guy that will pull offers from all of the football bluebloods. Like the aforementioned Brown, Wagner has been invited to participate in the Under Armour All American Elite Underclassmen camp.
player_tooltip player_id=”34450″ first=”Adam” last=”Trick”] 6’4 220- Adam projects to an OLB or DE at the college level. He runs well and does a good job of diagnosing the offense. Two words come to mind when you watch his and those would be, fundamentally sound. As Trick fills out he really has a chance to be a force in the run game. He also plays well in space when defending the pass. This makes him a double threat as you can walk him up to the line of scrimmage on passing downs for blitz/coverage options. Trick hasn’t totally broke onto the recruiting scene as of yet, but he’s starting to draw the eyes of college big boys Ohio State & Notre Dame and some other power 5 schools. Once he gets his first offer others will start to flow in.
Tyler Dorsey 6’0 185lbs- Tyler is a running back who exhibits good vision and a good combination of speed and acceleration. What I love about Dorsey’s game is his ability to put his foot in the ground and get north with the ball. He’s an explosive player that limits negative plays by his north/south mentality. Dorsey has played wr in the past as well so he’s a weapon in the passing game from both out of the backfield or split out as a receiver. How he fills out and gains strength will determine what kind of schools will come calling, but I really believe Tyler can play D1 college ball and would fit well in an offensive spread scheme that likes to create running lanes and likes versatile running backs.
Bryan Kinley 5’9 165- Kinley is an athlete who played some backup QB as a sophomore. I’d project him as a slot receiver or scat back in college at this point. Kinley shows good arm strength for his size, but unless he hits a growth spurt in the next year or 2, it’s hard to seem him playing QB at the college level. He’s definitely a player with the ability to make explosive plays and would be a nice trick play option with his ability to throw the ball. Right now I like Kinley as a division 2 or 3 caliber player.
I hope to profile a few of Wayne’s underclass at some point in the future, so stay tuned.
