The group has been working towards solidifying the building blocks to turning the program into a perennial state contender.
Lawrence, who already holds an offer from Grand View University, plans to do everything in his power to make sure this season is the best one yet for the Indians.
“It means a lot, especially this year,” Lawrence said of representing his school. “I’ve played with these guys for a very long time. We’ve been trying to change the football culture here at Camanche since we’ve been in high school and this is the season we feel we can make a deep run in the playoffs. It has been great competing at Camanche in all the sports I participate in.”
As a junior, Lawrence threw for 673 yards with five touchdowns, caught eight passes for 242 yards and four scores, and ran for 167 yards with a pair of TDs. He averaged just over 30 yards per reception last season.
“I will bounce back and forth between quarterback, slot receiver and wide receiver,” he said of his plans for this season. “I’d like to play receiver in college.”
Lawrence also had a handful of tackles and picked off two passes on defense.
As a sophomore, he caught 38 balls for 446 yards with six touchdowns, adding 124 yards and three more scores on the ground. Lawrence also picked off three passes that year on defense.
“I am super pumped to get back at it with my teammates,” he said. “It is a refreshing feeling to know that football season is back and we get to put in work as a team again. In the few days of week one we have had quality practices and that just makes me even more excited for the season.”
Lawrence has also talked with coaches from several schools include Yale, Wartburg, Dordt, Simpson, Coe and Iowa Western.
“I stayed in shape by lifting weights at home, running and throwing routes at our field before our summer workouts started,” he said of the extended offseason, “and I also train in Bettendorf with Athlete Development Project.”
Camanche is coming off its first winning season since 2010, having one 6-3 a year ago. After earning eight wins between 2012-17, the Indians have 10 the past two years.
