For Mounds View OLB Drew Lindgren, that was far from the case his junior season. After the Midwest Elite Showcase by Potenza Sports ended, Lindgren seeked me out afterward to talk about recruiting and where he is at compared to where he wants to be. I found out what an outgoing, hungry young prospect he was in our class of 2021, one that we, unfortunately, missed on our last prospect rankings but will be ranked in the top 35-50 when the next update comes out in the coming months. We caught up with Drew about his recruiting, his 2019 season, and what’s he has on tap for the 2021 season.

Class: 2021
Football Program: Mounds View
Get to Know Drew Lindgren
Lindgren, a named senior captain for the Mustangs, is being recruited as a linebacker and as an ATH because college coaches see the versatility in Drew. Coaches should know that Drew has a relentless motor, devotes himself to be the best he can be and can play all three downs from everything from rushing the QB, to executing coverages. In his first year at outside linebacker for the Mustangs, Lindgren showed off that motor and gathers 12.5 sacks for Mounds View of the Suburban East. “I am only six sacks away to break our school’s career record after playing one varsity season,” Lindgren said about the Mustang’s record he is trying to break in 2021. With his offseason, Lindgren has gone to a national level to get his game noticed, and with his growth and development, impressed some coaches with his athleticism in coverage from some of the more blue-chip football states like Florida, Texas, and others in his games of 7 on 7 he played with Orlando 7on7 this summer where he was going against the cream of the crop from those high-level states. Lindgren’s biggest strength on the football field is his toughness, mobility, and his football IQ.
Bests About Being an Athlete
You’ve now heard about Drew’s accolades at linebacker, but he also plays on the offensive side of the ball. “I started at tight end last year; however, I am currently training to play running back, full back, and some slot receiver this season,” Lindgren told PrepRedzone.com about his plan on the Mustangs offense in 2021.
Although a prospect that is transitioning to show more on offense, Lindgren still loves outside linebacker as his primary position. “I have the opportunity to blitz, contain and make plays in coverage,” he said about his favorites to do at OLB.
Recruiting Interest
Lindgren 100% wants to play college football and has gotten six offers, but he’s still missing the one he wants. “I know I have what it takes to play Division 1 football,” Lindgren told PRZ last week. He said he’s “excited” to have been offered by the top team in Division 2 in Mankato and NAIA in Grand View, but stated his recruiting is still wide open. Lindgren also holds offers from Mayville State, Dordt, St. Olaf, and Concordia-Moorhead and has interest coming in from the Missouri Valley, Ivy League, and the Pioneer League all in Division 1.
Elevator Pitch
For Lindgren’s elevator pitch, he had this to say to the possible schools perusing his talents.
The program I play for will that I am a mature, poised, and driven leader that will outwork the next guy in line.
Work Ons
When Lindgren was just a sophomore, he came out of that football season weighing only 175 pounds, which was a reliable indicator what his Mustang coaches needed him to work on to go into his junior season. Lindgren had a monster offseason, bulking up to 200 pounds as an incoming junior in his record-breaking season for the Mustangs. After his junior year, the Mustang coaches turned the focus for Lindgren; to agility and quickness. “I started working out with ETS in Woodbury, which has given me great results,” Lindgren said on this offseason’s improvements for agility and speed. In the past, Lindgren has played 7on7 with TNT Academy and Gain Sports out of Florida, who are great programs too. “Everyone that knows me understands how hard I have worked, how much I have improved my agility and quickness to elevating my game,” he had to say about the changes to his game we will see in 2021. Lindgren stands at 6’2 and now 210 pounds with a 40-yard dash around a 4.7.
Drew’s Mentor
Lindgren didn’t have to go far to find his mentor as he’s right at the high school in Mounds View head coach, Aaron Moberg. “When I came to Mounds View, he invested in me right away, made sure I was going to be the best guy I could be on and off the field,” Drew told us about his football coach. Moberg’s ability to give good advice and constructive criticism very clearly is what makes Lindgren him being the leader of the Mustangs on Friday nights. The Mounds View coaching staff all has this in mind: they want to see Lindgren and the rest of the Mustangs at their best in whatever it is that they do. Lindgren can’t thank Coach Moberg and the Mounds View football program enough for giving him the time of day to know what Mustang football is all about in his four years there.
Learning from 2019 and Goals for 2021
Lindgren said his “focus and ability to remain locked in,” was one of the critical components he learned about himself as a player in 2019. Drew said from a technical side, learning more in-depth about his alignment, assignment, and technique from 2019 has helped him crank back and build for 2021 by watching the film. Lindgren, from a team standpoint, has also taken the following script from coaches and his teammates, learning as a captain how to manage his team’s defense, playing football with different players, hearing criticism from teammates. It has also been up to Lindgren to keep the Mustangs spirits and motivation up, as we move to an early Spring football season, which was tough on every player, including the 2021’s who play football in this state.
All in all, Lindgren’s goals are simple for the Mustangs: Give 100% effort every chance we get and break Mounds View’s sacks record. Lindgren dropped a hint at us at the end of his report saying, “I have some game film to put together!!”
Lindgren is also an exceptional student who holds a 3.7 GPA and a 1240 SAT score, which is inside the 90th percentile for the SAT.
If you are looking for a “blow up” tackler at linebacker, I strongly suggest you watch Lindgren’s film as there is that to love and a whole lot more with his game.
