The Tryout had a ton of talented participants trying to join the oldest and one of the best 7on7 programs in Minnesota, Potenza Sports who travels nationally every year for tournaments and plays against the elite competition of 7on7 programs built by NFL stars Cam Newton and Deion Sanders, to name a few.
See who were the top performers I had my eye on in my article called “The Tryout” put on by Potenza Sports, which featured some of the top prospects Minnesota and Wisconsin had to offer.
Warren Kinney, RB/ATH, St. Brooklyn Center (2022)
Kinney impressed me with the way he cuts so quickly on his routes. His main position is running back, but the way this kid cuts, I can see him becoming a stud slot receiver. Still has some raw skills but is a workhorse, and will turn into a nice college prospect out of the Class of 2022. New to Minnesota. I Will update when I hear where he is playing high school football.
Finn McElroy, QB, Edina (2023)
I got a first and second glimpse of McElroy both Wednesday and Thursday this week. Finn is a competitor that won’t blow you away from a mobility standpoint but has the tools to make a wide range of throws. Finn was playing at Wayzata last year in a more rushing offense and has recently transferred to Edina, which with the Hornets offense, should be an excellent fit for McElroy being how much more active they are in the passing game compared to the Trojans.
Matteo Bonnin Matteo Bonnin 6'3" | 210 lbs | WR Hudson | 2021 State WI , WR/TE, Hudson (WI) (2021)
Bonnin can flat out play, and he showed it in front of the Minnesota scouts tonight. Such a defensive nightmare from a size perspective towering over the secondary. Watching him making catches across the middle, the field makes you think he could possibly be a great asset to a program as a pass-catching tight end. He has the size at 6’3 and around 200 pounds, to be a wide receiver now with some speed, but don’t be surprised if this Hudson Raider plays somewhere new in college.
Marcus Mattox Marcus Mattox DB Minneapolis Southwest | 2021 State MN , CB/WR, Minnneapolis Southwest (2021)
Mattox was a spot cornerback that caught my eye on Thursday night. A prospect who knows how to line up well gives himself the best angle to make a play on the football. Had three interceptions last year for the Lakers. He holds one offer thus far from Bemidji State with plenty more options at the next level.
Jack Behning Jack Behning 6'4" | 180 lbs | WR Lester Prairie | 2022 State MN , WR/ATH, Alexandria (2022)
The kids will understand when I say this, Hoskins is an absolute gamer. Crank up your Madden ratings up to 99 in speed, acceleration, and agility, and you have Jack Behning Jack Behning 6'4" | 180 lbs | WR Lester Prairie | 2022 State MN . Excellent pass catcher that caught the eye of absolutely everyone at Fernbrook Fields on Thursday night. Most scouts will say he is undersized, but when you have speed like that, it doesn’t even matter because speed outweighs the rest. My question is, where is the love?! Mid 4’s speed and everything else I just told you makes me think Hoskins is the biggest kept secret in the state from the Northwoods of Alexandria. Time to buy the stock now college programs, you won’t regret it for a second.
Terence Campbell, RB, Rosemount (2021)
Campbell is a running back with some bounce. A prospect with a strong body to break thru tackles for always a few extra yards and possibly that first down your college program is looking for. Campbell, in my opinion, needs more big plays on his film tape, but I still think it is flying under the radar because he also is a capable pass-catcher. Gives me James White type vibes because he can do a little of everything. Holds one offer from Concordia-Moorhead along with some interest from a few Northern Sun programs.
Peyton Himley, WR/FS, Edina (2023)
Himley was another one of those prospects that got up and made a big-time play on Thursday in Maple Grove. I went up for a tough ball against a bigger receiver and made a play on the ball. The more I look at this 2023 class from Edina, the more I get excited to watch them blossom over the next few years.
Mason Ailie, TE, Dassel-Cokato (2022)
Big body and a player that played physical throughout the evening in Maple Grove. Tons of size would primarily make a solid blocking tight end but has the hands to make a play when needed. Very under the radar, no film via Hudl. Sleeper type prospect out of an excellent football program in the Chargers.
