Continue ReadingNew Jersey Group V powerhouse Piscataway will not be participating in the 2020 season. Of the four teams to cancel their season so far, the Braves are likely the most notable. The emotions experienced by their coaching staff and seniors over this lost season are immeasurable, but don’t create much of a shakeup in our 2021 or 2022 rankings. Piscataway may not feature a prospect in either top 100, but their prowess as one of the best coached teams in the area provides a valuable scouting benchmark for recruits on their would-be schedule.
Set to open the season on October 2nd at New Brunswick, Piscataway would face 2022’s 52nd ranked prospect in North Brunswick defensive back Jayden Myers Jayden Myers 5'9" | DB North Brunswick | 2022 NJ in week three and finish their season against Old Bridge quarterback Owen Haughney Owen Haughney 6'1" | QB Old Bridge | 2022 NJ – currently ranked 74th in his class.
While these players still have time to show their skills in big time games, it’s never too early to look at what they bring to the field currently in preparation for an unprecedented season.
2022 DB Jayden Myers Jayden Myers 5'9" | DB North Brunswick | 2022 NJ , North Brunswick
Myers is a fluid man coverage cornerback that displays an understanding of coverage assignments beyond his experience. Using the sideline to his advantage, Myers squeezes receivers and is patient to flip his hips out of the pedal. When Myers does break on the ball, he’s a willing tackler coming downhill with adequate speed and form. Not overly aggressive at the catch point, Myers competes through the play to disrupt passes after they’ve reached his target with long arms.
Not afraid to use his length at the line of scrimmage either, this is a difficult player to escape on the boundary at cornerback. Myers intercepted three passes for North Brunswick, two of which came in shutout wins over South Brunswick and Piscataway a year ago – who the Raiders will have to wait until at least 2021 to line up against.
2022 QB Owen Haughney Owen Haughney 6'1" | QB Old Bridge | 2022 NJ , Old Bridge
Haughney won all five of his starts last season for Old Bridge, including a three touchdown performance against Sayreville. With a high release point, the ball leaves Haughney’s hands with plenty of zip.
Not a natural upper body thrower, Haughney stands tall in the pocket and isn’t afraid to take a hit when delivering the ball. With his receivers making a living down the middle of the field, accuracy is critical for Haughney. This is a player that throws his targets open with back shoulder passes, and flashes the ability to take something off throws to beat linebackers in coverage.
Haughney will move his shoulders to manipulate a defense, capable of coming off his first read and checking the ball down – turning it over only twice as a sophomore. Currently ranked ninth out of the 2022 QBs, Haughney is firmly in the “next” group of passers to keep an eye on, as seven of the players ranked above him sit in the top 50 overall.
As more teams potentially cancel their 2020 seasons in New Jersey, prospects that lose out on valuable competition will be highlighted right here. Along with Piscataway, a scouting outlook across the schedules for Carteret, Teaneck, and West Windsor-Plainsboro will follow.
