Week 1 in Indiana had a number of breakout performances, but many of them came from players who have already played extended minutes on varsity. Here is a list of players that had breakout games in their first extended varsity competition!
- ATH Marquise Ballard- Boonville, 2024
Marquise came out with a bang in his first HS game by making an impact on offense, defense, and special teams. He didn’t put up insane numbers in any area, but when you turn on the film… you see a kid that has a bright future and D1 potential with continued development. He had 2 tackles, 128 all purpose yards, an interception, and a punt return for a TD. I guarantee you will be hearing his name plenty in the coming years!!
- QB Brock Casper – North Manchester, 2023
Brock’s first varsity start was a memorable one. Not only did the sophomore lead his team to a 47-12 win over North Miami, he threw for 288 yards and 4 touchdowns without throwing a single interception. As a coach, you never know how a first time starter at QB will handle the pressure, and Brock passed with flying colors. The yardage and TD numbers are impressive, but the numbers that stand out the most for his first varsity start, are his 79% completion rate, and not forcing any throws for INT’s on the night. Heck of a way to start your career as a QB!
- RB Luke Switzer- South Putnam, 2023
It only took Luke 7 carries to rack up 128 yards and 3 TD’s. Everything was clicking for the South Putnam offense as they scored 84 points week 1. When you turn on the film, it wasn’t like he was just running free, he was making players miss and breaking tackles with every cary. When you see 128 yards on 7 carries you would assume that a player broke off a 90 yard run, but that was not the case. With a long of 35… every time Switzer touched the ball he was picking up chunks of yardage. Definitely a prospect to keep an eye on in the coming years!
- WR Chase Carrington- Greencastle, 2023
Chase did get some time on varsity last season, but this was the first game that he was the go to guy! Chase had 9 receptions for 149 yards and 2 TD’s. He also had an explosive 56 yard catch. Greencastle only 11 passes completed on the night, so when you look at the percentage of passes completed to Carrington, you begin to see how dominant he was on the night. To top it off, he also completed a pass, ran for a 34 yard TD, and handled the kickoff return and punt return duties. Expect a big year out of this prospect moving forward!
- ATH Dorian Watson- Phalen Leadership Academy, 2023
Talk about making your presence felt on all 3 phases of the game during your first varsity start. There aren’t too many players who can say the scored a TD on offense, defense, and special teams in a game… Dorian did just that. With a 75 yard fumble recovery for a TD, a 40 yard reception for a TD, and a kickoff return for a TD, Dorian may have been the difference in the game. As a college coach, you are looking for a player that can help you win in as many ways as possible, and Dorian looks like he is starting to fit that profile. Look for big things out of him this season.
