Until today, though, his only offers to play at the next level had come from Eastern New Mexico and Macalester College in Saint Paul, MN.
On Monday, though, Oberheu finally gained the opportunity he had long sought to play Division I football when nearby New Mexico State offered him.
Ruidoso is 115 miles from Las Cruces, where NMSU is located, so his family and friends should be able to come see him play on a regular basis.
“This offer means a lot because it’s close to home and my first D-1 offer,” Oberheu told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “Coach (Oliver) Soukup came and visited me my freshman year, and we have been in contact since then. I am really excited for the offer!”
Souku is the assistant head coach and linebackers coach for the Aggies.
Because Ruidoso is just a two-hour drive from the NMSU campus, Oberheu has visited the school in the past and toured the football facilities.
“I have visited campus and the facilities are great,” said Oberheu, who has played multiple positions for Ruidoso but is being recruited as a tight end by the Aggies.
Oberheu said New Mexico and Air Force (located in Colorado Springs, CO) have expressed interest, and he has spoken with coaches at both schools. He has also visited several other schools in Colorado.
As of now, his first opportunity to sign with a school will come in mid-December during the early signing period.
Oberheu is ranked No. 15 on our list of the top 2021 prospects in the state of New Mexico. Last season he caught 46 passes for 669 yards (14.5 yards per catch) and six touchdowns as Ruidoso, which competes in arguably the toughest district in Class 4A (Portales, Lovington and Silver are also in the district), reached the quarterfinals of the state playoffs.
Blessed to receive my first D-1 offer to continue my football & academic career from New Mexico State University. Thank you Coaches Soukup and Davis for your confidence in me. #AggieUp @CoachChiliDavis @osoukup @NMStateFootball @decemberfb @nmpreps @PrepRedzoneNM @simplyCoachO
