There is always countless talent on offense and defense, and the 2020 season should be no different. Who will open some eyes on the football field? Let’s take a look at five electric players in Union County.
Diante Wilson, Union, Sr. – Wilson is coming off an excellent junior season where he rushed for 1,114 yards on 102 carries with 10 touchdowns. His top performance came in a win over Clifton where he ran for 220 yards on 13 carries with a pair of scores. He makes quite a lot of plays at linebacker on defense, too. Last season Wilson had two sacks, 80 tackles, a forced fumble, three fumble recoveries, including one for a touchdown, and an interception for a score. Wilson has great speed and is strong at finding holes and making defenders miss. He will be key in the Farmers being a top team in the state once again.
Jason Hunter, Hillside, Sr. – Hillside went a perfect 12-0 last season, and a large part of that was due to its defense. Hunter, listed at middle linebacker and tight end, will be a leader on that side of the ball after 54 tackles, a pair of interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery last season. Hunter is an aggressive player on defense and he had a good sense of awareness on the field.
Jared Mcrae, Roselle, Sr. – Mcrae is a force on both ends for Roselle. He had a monster junior season, accumulating 1,004 yards rushing on 132 carries and four touchdowns. Mcrae ran for over 100 yards in the last five games of the season, with his season-best coming against Highland Park where he rushed for 169 yards on 16 carries and a score. Mcrae is a force on the defensive end as well. Last season, the senior finished with 105 tackles, three sacks, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He had a 20-tackle performance against Johnson. Mcrae can fight through blocks and he has a knack for finding the ball carrier when on defense. Expect him to finish his senior year out strong.
Jayson Schmidt, Gov. Livingston, Sr. – Schmidt had a very nice junior season for Gov. Livingston. He rushed for 1,038 yards on 165 carries with 11 touchdowns. He had five games of at least 100 yards, including a dominant 211-yard performance on 21 carries with two scores against Roselle. Schmidt was also productive at cornerback for the Highlanders. Schmidt is elusive in the backfield with his capability of breaking tackles and making defenders miss.
Charlie Barth Charlie Barth 5'11" | RB New Providence | 2022 State NJ , New Providence, Jr. – Barth had a strong year for New Providence at running back and linebacker. He exploded for 1,510 yards on 174 carries with 19 touchdowns. One of his top performances came when Barth ran for 301 yards on 19 carries with four scores. He is capable of exploding for a TD on any run, he can make receiving plays and he is also a force on the defensive end. Barth finished with 102 tackles and 2.5 sacks. In that game against Belvidere, he had 21 tackles. In the previous week, the Pioneer totaled 10 tackles and two sacks to go along with a forced fumble. Barth can make plays in the backfield at will, and his best may be yet to come.
