Atlantic’s Grant Sturm added his name into the state records with his four-interception performance in a 7-0 victory over Clarinda this past Friday night.
“No, I never imagined picking off four passes in one game,” Sturm said. “They just kept throwing it my way and I kept coming down with it.”
The last player to accomplish the same feat was Alex DeJong from Oskaloosa in 2016 against Fairfield. Six players have picked off five passes in a season, with the last coming in 2007 courtesy Taylor Otto of Durant-Bennett.
“I actually didn’t know I’d be put into the state record books,” Sturm said. “That’s another thing I never imagined and it feels really good.”
Sturm had two of his interceptions during the fourth quarter including one with just under three minutes left and another on the final play of the game.
“(Winning) was definitely the best feeling of them all,” he said. “It was obviously a hard-fought defensive battle with a score of 7-0, but overall it was a good win for us.”
