The camp was set up in a staggered format so scouts could see and work with each group of kids at different times throughout the day. This helps immensely because it allows us to bring a one-on-one aspect to the scouting during 40s, cone drills, etc. I look forward to going to another showcase in the future – the atmosphere was very professional, and all the coaches were very receptive and easy to work with. It was really a joy to be out there coaching the kids after every drill to get better – truly a great experience for the first showcase in my young scouting career. If all the camps make me feel this welcome, I will be back for as many showcases as possible; hopefully, we see one closer in Southern Illinois (we are working on it every day) in our future.
I watched many offensive linemen during my time at the camp and saw some maulers ready to play at the next level. The following young men were the standouts for me on the day:
OL/Tackle-Peyton Mazur, 6’4 340, Christopher Community HS, 2022
This young man made the 6-hour journey to Wilmette, IL, to show off his talents against the best around, and he did! Peyton’s size – particularly the size of his calves – jumped out at me immediately. He is built to be a run-blocking mauler at Right Tackle without question. He has excellent strength and strong hands; the footwork is good; needs to get a bit quicker but that can be improved. I have no doubt that we’ll see this kid at the next level.
OL/Guard- Brian Smith, 6’0 260, Homewood-Flossmoor HS, 2021
This young man may have put in one of the best workouts of the day – he showed up ready to work, without question. He has the speed and twitchy quickness to be a great pulling guard. Excellent technique in every drill with great intensity; he needs to play at the next level somewhere. Any college that lands him is getting a real lunch pail worker who can play fast. He could be a fantastic center; we just don’t see enough players with his attributes playing center.
OL/Tackle- Will McCorkle, 6’5 295, Carmel Catholic HS, 2021
This big kid loves this game, and you can see it in the intensity he brings to the field. I say that because some of these kids weren’t ready for him holding the bag coming downhill. He has excellent speed for his size, matched with incredible strength to control any defender in front of him. I got to speak with him and could see the passion he brings to the game; I know the program he chooses to play for is getting a hard-working leader for their offensive line.
OL/Tackle- Gabriel Krahn, 6’3 280, Mount Carmel HS, 2021
He impressed me with his intensity, size, speed, and strength. He has excellent technique with his kick step in pass protection. During the cone drill, he controlled his body very well by not over-committing. As with all of the guys on this list, he was one of the Offensive Linemen leaders at camp and set the bar high.
OL/Guard- Reyes Gonzalez, 5’8 235, Warren Township HS, 2022
Reyes showed up ready to work, which was evident in the intensity he brought to every drill. He gets low and drives through the block—twitchy quick for the guard positon; he could also play center with great success. He gets his power from the speed with which he accelerates out of his 3-point stance, truly outstanding. He lacks a bit of size, but makes up for it in every other area; no doubt he will get more prominent in the weight room.
QB- Keegan Glover, 6’0 165, Benton HS, 2022
The lone QB I’m writing about is my guy Keegan down in Benton, who made the 6-hour drive for the late-night QB session. He ran his 40 in 4.7 hand time/4.8 laser time, and from what I saw, Keegan was by far the fastest QB out there. His cone drill was clean and quick, and watching him throw to some of the best Wide Receivers in the state showed off his exemplary ball placement. You can see the work he has put in is paying off!
RB- Joshua Brown, 5’9 188, Willowbrook HS, 2022
WOW! That was my first impression of this kid – he is built to play this game and exceptionally strong. During the route running portion, his ability inside of 5 yards to create separation was outstanding. He was so much stronger than anyone guarding him; he just threw their hands out of the way and was gone. I hope to see more of him at showcases and will make sure to catch him play in the spring. In my opinion, he was the best athlete at the showcase, point blank. He is a very well-spoken and humble young man – he never walks, is always hustling, and I was just really impressed with him.
SPOTLIGHT PLAYER
I will be including a player in each article that isn’t getting enough looks around the scouting world. These are the players who can’t make it to showcases but are busting their butt to get better, faster, and stronger.
DT/NG- Myles Watson, 6’1 249, Thornton Fractional South HS, 2021
Myles has regularly contacted me about his workouts, and I’m impressed with his determination to play on the next level. Watching his hudl, he is very quick off the ball and has a nose for the ball. He is very strong at the point of attack while creating separation from his blocker. He keeps his eyes up and always moving with high intensity. This young man is getting stronger every day, and teams will take notice of him this spring. College recruiters shouldn’t sleep on this senior ready to work and help any program excel.
