Continue ReadingIt took a little bit of luck and a whole lot of heart and determination, but St. Edmond was victorious on its home field Friday night over Manson Northwest Webster, 39-37 in double overtime.
The game featured some similarities from two years ago when the Gaels picked up a 22-14 triumph in overtime vs. the Cougars. The two schools are separated by just over 20 miles.
In 2018, Kase Baker caught a touchdown pass from Drew Schaeffer for the winning score, with the SEHS defense holding MNW out of the end zone to secure the win.
This time around, Baker punched in the two-point conversion to cap a wild game that featured over 800 yards of total offense and eight consecutive missed extra points.
Yes, you read that correctly. Eight consecutive missed extra points, including one by each team in the first extra session.
Manson NW senior Brayden Johll ran for 312 yards and two touchdowns officially on 31 carries. For St. Edmond, Drew Schaeffer threw a pair of touchdowns, with Parker Oswald his top target with five catches for 141 yards and a score.
Johll Was Special – And Injured
Earlier in the week, Brayden Johll wasn’t even sure if he was going to be able to play against St. Edmond.
But the Manson NW senior dug deep and pushed through.
Johll suffered a sprained ankle when a teammate rolled up on him in practice. All the senior tailback did was carry the ball 31 times for 312 yards and two touchdowns, averaging over 10 yards per attempt.
Several times, Johll could be seen limping on the field. But he continued to ask for the ball.
Special Teams Troubles
The two teams continued to give their kicker the benefit of the doubt, but it proved costly.
After each team made their first PAT attempt of the game, they missed eight in a row – four on both sides.
It was definitely an area that each will look to improve greatly upon over the next several days in practice.
While extra points were hard to watch, the St. Edmond special teams shined on coverage. They held Tate Bianchi to just one 17-yard kickoff return and two punt returns for a total of seven yards.
Balance Leads The Gaels
Three backs had over 55 yards, with both Sean Flattery and Tyler Rossmanith scoring two touchdowns each. Plus, Kase Baker had his game-winning conversion on a run.
Baker ran for 62 yards, Flattery 61 and Rossmanith 55 against a defense that was much, much bigger across the board. St. Edmond had 166 yards on 45 carries as a team.
Drew Schaefer hit three targets, with Parker Oswald catching five balls for 141 yards and a touchdown. Anthony Lacina had four receptions for 104 yards and a score, and Rossmanith caught a 17-yard pass.
