For those that did get out there on the field, they enjoyed it even though much of the state was hit with rain throughout the night.
In one of the more shocking results of the week, Johnston upset seven-time defending champion and top-ranked Class 4A program West Des Moines Dowling.
The Maroons were coming off a victory over West Des Moines Valley, while the Dragons were 1-1. The result showed that the state’s biggest class really could be up for grabs this fall.
Cedar Falls, another contender in 4A, was stunned by Cedar Rapids Prairie, while Southeast Polk will likely ascend to No. 1 after throttling Cedar Rapids Jefferson.
Adel-ADM Clips Norwalk, 50-49
It might have looked like a basketball score, but Adel-ADM is enjoying a big win.
The Tigers overcame an early deficit to best Norwalk, 50-49.
Tate Stine-Smith Tate Stine-Smith 6'0" | 180 lbs | QB Adel DeSoto Minburn | 2021 IA flashed his dual-threat abilities, throwing for 168 yards, running for 226 and accounting for five total touchdowns.
That helped off-set the night of Max Juergens. as the quarterback was 30-for-46 for 386 yards with six passing touchdowns, adding another 115 yards rushing on 21 carries. Ethan Carlson caught 17 passes for 207 yards and a score, but it wasn’t enough.
Kelly Leads West Hancock Past Garrigan
In one of the more storied small-school rivalries, West Hancock controlled Bishop Garrigan, 35-0.
Cole Kelly put the game on his shoulders, carrying the ball 20 times for 303 yards and four touchdowns. The senior now has 564 yards and seven scores on the year.
Braden Walk picked off two passes, returning one for a score to set up a prime matchup with unbeaten St. Edmond next Friday for the district lead.
Burgess, Shearer Continue Punishing Defenses
Eddie Burgess and Trey Shearer are two incredible talents on the basketball field. They are also showing out on the football gridiron this fall.
The Montezuma pair helped the team to a 56-20 victory over New London this past week.
Burgess was 17-for-25 for 224 yards with four passing touchdowns, adding 188 yards and two more scores on the ground.
Shearer caught 10 passes for 121 yards and four touchdowns, rushing for 56 yards and another score.
On the season, Burgess has 21 total touchdowns and over 1,200 yards of offense. Shearer has already caught 28 passes for 356 yards and seven TDs.
Shootout Goes To Sergeant Bluff-Luton
Sergeant Bluff-Luton and Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley gave fans who withstood the inclement weather quite the show, as SB-L pulled out a 42-35 victory.
Kaden Helt was unstoppable, running for 265 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 12 yards per carry. Tyler Smith provided the balance, throwing for 220 yards and adding 26 with two total TDs.
Smith found six different targets, keeping the B-H/RV defense guessing.
On the other side, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley’s Caleb Kats, Kody Noble and Landyn Van Kekerix did all they could. Kats threw for 217 with four total scores, Noble ran for 150 with a TD and Van Kekerix had nine receptions for 131 yards and a touchdown.
Future Hawkeye Injured
There was a scary moment in Forest City, as future University of Iowa Hawkeye Zach Twedt Zach Twedt 6'3" | 220 lbs | ATH Roland-Story | 2021 State IA was forced off the field with an injury.
Twedt, who committed to the Hawkeyes last year, was injured late in the game. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound athlete entered the night as the leading rusher for his team while also recording almost 10 tackles on defense.
He is expected to play as a linebacker for the Hawkeyes next year.
