Here are some of the top players from the game. Washburn Rural is a young team with a bright future with the vast majority of their current starters being sophomores and juniors reminiscent of where Lawrence was two seasons ago.
Jackson Dooley QB Lawrence
Lawrence QB Jackson Dooley had an incredible game against Washburn Rural as he completed 18 of 23 passes for 297 yds and 3 touchdowns despite playing less than 3 quarters. Looking at the film, Jackson shows good pocket presence, sees the entire field well, possesses a strong accurate arm as he can make all of the throws and shows the ability to deliver the ball accurately while scrambling. He is able to put the ball on the correct shoulder of the receiver which enables the receiver to maximize yards after the catch.
Devin Neal Devin Neal 5'11" | 210 lbs | RB Lawrence | 2021 State KS RB Lawrence
The soon to be Kansas Jayhawk again showed why he is one of the best players in the state as he rushed for 57 yds on 11 carries and a TD while also catching 4 passes for 50 yds and a receiving touchdown. Once he gets the ball in his hands, he shows great burst through the hole, has the athletic ability to elude defenders while also showing enough power to run over larger defenders. In addition, he is very effective in the passing game as he is a reliable receiver who shows the manual dexterity to make the catch when the ball is thrown out of his strike zone and uses his play speed to accelerate for large gains.
Dylan Gillespie DL Lawrence
The Senior DT Dylan Gillespie made several great plays against Washburn Rural. He finished with 1.5 sacks. He is explosive off the ball, uses his play strength, leverage and great use of hands to easily overpower the Center or Guard, uses his football intelligence and instincts to read the play and delivers a powerful hit on the RB. An effective pass rusher as he quickly defeats the OL with power and quickness, uses his play speed and motor to chase down the quarterback.
John Green WR Lawrence
Senior WR had some nice receptions against Washburn Rural. He caught 7 passes for 119 yds and a TD. Green is a great route runner who uses his athletic ability to get behind defenders on deep routes and shows good hip fluidity while manipulating defenders to break off his stem at a 45 and 90 degree angle on slant and in/out routes. He possesses good hands as he can make catches on balls with his hands that are thrown on and off target while accelerating quickly en route to large gains. During the game, he saw a lot of one on one situations due to Washburn Rural trying to stack many defenders in the box in their attempt to slow down Neal.
Austin Fager RB Washburn Rural
Junior RB Austin Fager’s play was a bright spot for Washburn Rural. He showed tremendous heart while going up against easily one of the best defenses in the state gaining 29 yds and a rushing TD while catching a pass for 5 yds accounting for 34 of Washburn Rural’s 89 total yards including all 29 of their rushing yds.
Dayton Smoot P Washburn Rural
In addition to RB Austin Fager, P Dayton Smoot also provided a bright spot for Washburn Rural as he averaged 37.3 yds on 8 punts. In doing so, he gave the defense a lot of field to work with when they came back in the game.
