From big programs to rural squads, Friday Night Lights is in full effect. The following players, or ones I call #BellRingers, needed to be the best players on the field for their team to win. They were and now they are Prep Redzone MVPs.
QB Joe Kroenke, Senior, Liberty North (5’10, 175) Talk about efficiency. Anytime a player can go 9-10 passing and almost half of those throws go for scores, you deserve to be an MVP. Capping off a four touchdown night, the senior, who has had an up and down season, played lights out in a major win over Blue Springs. Moving effortlessly in the pocket, Kroenke was able to make tough throws look easy and was zoned in.
QB Kaden McMullen Kaden McMullen 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB Living Word Christian | 2021 State MO , Senior, Living Word Christian (6’3, 200) Lots of people have unfairly taken shots at the senior on the field and in the media this offseason. The man in the arena is the one that counts, not the critics and McMullen has shaken off the noise and started to ring his own bell. Leading his team to a heart-stopping win, the right-handed thrower connected on three bombs, all covering more than 40 yards and all going for touchdowns. McMullen has poise in the pocket, good ball carriage and accuracy down field. Already holding multiple college scholarship offers, games like Fridays are why college coaches will continue to descend on the O’Fallon program.
RB Dane Mohrmann, Senior, Francis Howell (5’11, 205) Week in and week out, the senior running back makes play after play. But in a gigantic win over Troy, Mohrmann went for four touchdowns and never seemed to wear out. The FH product runs behind his pads well, bounces off would-be tacklers, uses his stiff-arm effectively and picks up yards after contact. In an offense that counts on the senior being his best, Mohrmann continually rings the bell. I have a sneaky feeling Mohrmann’s best football is still in his future.
ATH Jalen Lee Jalen Lee 6'1" | 185 lbs | DB Fort Zumwalt North | 2022 State MO , Junior, Francis Howell North (6’1, 180) Mr. Do-it-all on Friday night scored three touchdowns. Two of those scores came on offense and one on a sweet scoop and score. Lee can play receiver, running back and any spot in the secondary. The junior can get up to top speed quickly off the line of scrimmage or from his back pedal. He is easy in his hip turn, dropping his weight and exploding to the football. With Lee’s size, quickness and flexibility his college recruiting should take off soon, especially with games like Fridays.
RB Laterrion West Laterrion West 5'7" | 180 lbs | RB Orchard Farms | 2022 State MO , Junior, Orchard Farms (5’8, 170) Welcome to the MVP party Mr. West! The performance the junior put together in a dominant win was eye-popping. Toting the rock 22 times for 226 yards and a score not only is MVP-worthy but career setting. West is one of the hardest working players in the area and strives to be more than great. Using his quick feet, compact running style and his ability to be coached, West is a teammates’ and coaches’ dream. West is the ideal E + R = O player because he always has a positive response!
ATH Derek Williams Derek Williams 6'0" | 195 lbs | QB Windsor | 2021 MO , Senior, Windsor (6’1, 205) While he lines up in the QB position, Williams is more than just a passer. If anything, the team counts on his legs to win games. The senior rushed 12 times for 256 yards and three touchdowns in a magnificent win on Friday. Watching his tape, I am surprised more colleges don’t recruit him as a linebacker. Williams is tough as a $2 steak, LOVES contact, has above average speed and is a gamer. Football needs players like Williams and anytime I watch a player who makes me want to play again, that is the definition of a #BellRinger!
WR Andrew Lenzen, Senior, Northwest (5’9, 160) Get off the football clean, run the right route, sit down and present your numbers to the QB, pluck the football and pick up yards after the catch. Watch film on Drew Lenzen and the above statement becomes a mantra. A comforting measure of consistency radiates from the receiver every time he is on the field, even on defense as a cornerback. But Lenzen stood out as a WR versus Seckman snatching five catches for 179 yards and a touchdown. As a multiple sport athlete, Lenzen will bring his steady hand to a fortunate college program in 2021.
ATH Cashius Howell Cashius Howell 6'4" | 220 lbs | LB Rockhurst | 2021 State MO , Senior, Rockhurst (6’4, 220) Howell was ranked as the No. 33 best player in the Missouri in the preseason. Games like Friday where he dominated the opponent and stood head and shoulders above the rest, it will be easy to see that ranking moving up with a bullet. Howell uses speed, explosiveness and uncanny understanding of angles to win on both sides of the ball. When he carries the football on offense, he is a threat to score from anywhere on the field. As a defender, he blitzes with savvy and drops runners in their tracks with vicious hits. With 20-plus D1 offers, Howell is going to make one college coaching staff very happy.
