Now he’s narrowed his choice to eight schools.
Ortega announced his Elite Eight earlier this week: Colgate, Columbia, Cornell, Delaware State, Fordham, Georgetown, Lamar and Lehigh. Most of those schools compete at the FCS level, and are considered elite educationally.
Two are Ivy League schools: Columbia and Cornell.
“Each of my top eight are schools where I can compete at a high level, and receive a world class education as well,” Ortega told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “My ultimate goal is to attend a school that I fit best in. Whether that’s Ivy League or not, we’ll see.”
Ortega acknowledges he is still hoping for a late offer from an FBS school. But he can’t wait forever with the early signing period looming in three months unless changed by the NCAA, which has forbidden official visits and face-to-face contact between college coaches and prospects since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March.
“I am still hoping for some FBS schools to offer but I am leaving that all up to God,” Ortega said. “As far as my time frame (for a decision), I want to commit sooner rather than later. Right now, I’m just taking it day by day.”
WEBSKOWSKI COMMITS: Division II Eastern New Mexico made quite an impression on 2021 Clovis running back Jeston Webskowski Jeston Webskowski 6'0" | 185 lbs | RB Clovis | 2021 State NM whenever he visited campus or attended a Greyhounds game in nearby Portales.
So much so that Webskowski, arguably the state’s top 2021 RB prospect after rushing for more than 1,700 yards and 27 touchdowns for the Wildcats in 2019, committed to ENMU over offers from at least five FCS schools: Abilene Christian, Incarnate Word, Montana, Northern Arizona and Tarleton State.
ENMU was Webskowski‘s first offer in March.
“The key factors in my decision were playing for a good winning team, playing close to home, and especially getting a free education,” Webskowski told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “I knew what was best for me and Eastern was the best option not only for football but life after that as well.”
As you would expect, Webskowski’s family and the ENMU coaching staff were very excited about his decision to stay local. His commitment signifies a major recruiting coup for the Greyhounds considering they beat out nearly a half dozen schools competing at a higher NCAA level for Webskowski’s pledge.
“My family was very happy for me and they were very supportive of my decision regardless of where I was going,” Webskowski said. “(The ENMU coaches) were just as excited as I was. They’ve always brought great energy. I attended many games (at ENMU) last season and the environment was always great.”
