Whether it’s a player in the secondary or the rare case of a defensive lineman picking off the quarterback, getting the offense the ball back is key in football. Turnovers often determine which team wins a football game. Let’s take a look at some returning interception leaders.
Antonio Cuffari, Cedar Grove, Sr. – Cuffari is the top returning interceptions leader following six picks a season ago at cornerback. He had two interceptions against Glen Ridge, and then one each in wins over Hanover Park, Newark Collegiate, Emerson Boro and Butler. Cuffari has a knack for finding the ball through reading the quarterback’s eyes and where he’s looking to go with the football. Cuffari has the ability to make an interception and take it back for a score. Expect him to continue his strong defensive ways in his senior year.
Wendell Cadet, Elizabeth, Jr. – Cadet is coming off a five-interception sophomore year for Elizabeth out of Union County. He is capable of making tons of plays at safety through great reads and hard hits. Expect him to continue to make strides for Elizabeth as he enters his junior year.
TiJere Jackson, Clayton, Jr. – Jackson was another playmaker on defense with five interceptions in his sophomore year at Clayton. He finished with two picks in a shutout win over Schalick, and he had interceptions in games against Gloucester, Wildwood and Haddon Township. In addition, Jackson forced seven fumbles, had two fumble recoveries and had 67 tackles on the year.

Nasir Hill Nasir Hill 6'1" | DB St. Augustine | 2022 State NJ , St. Augustine, Jr. – Hill is a three-star prospect at defensive back. He has generated some college interest from Power 5 programs, and he’s another player who can do it all on a football field. Last year at St. Augustine, Hill made five interceptions in games against St. Joseph (Hamm.), Shawnee, Rancocas Valley, Holy Spirit and Williamstown. He had an interception return for a score against Williamstown.
Giye Jenkins, Seton Hall Prep, Sr. — Jenkins is a senior wide receiver/defensive back who can make plays on both sides of the ball. He does a good job of reading plays on defense and getting in front of the ball. Last year as a junior, Jenkins totaled 60 tackles and five interceptions. He had nine tackles and two picks in a win over Pope John last November. He is a player who can make an impact in a variety of ways, and he’ll be a defensive player to watch this season.
