While there seemed to be a shortage of fans for such a big game, due to Covid restrictions there was clearly no shortage of offensive talent on display at Lancer stadium.
Saint X
Brogan McCaughey- the 6’1 185 pound quarterback threw for 309 yards while completing 21 of 32 passing attempts and 3 touchdowns. The junior showed poise in the pocket and also the ability to evade a rush and throw on the run. McCaughey is very impressive as you watch him work through his throwing progressions. He’s definitely a player to keep your eye on in the 2022 class.
A big reason Brogan had the night he did was the play of Saint X’s massive offensive line let by Brian Parker Brian Parker 6'5" | 285 lbs | OL St. Xavier | 2022 State OH III. The 6’5 276 pound Center had his way on the inside. Parker’s combination of size, strength, and agility make him a have landed him a bevy of D1 offers from mid-majors as well as power 5 school Pitt. He’s had interest from P5 schools already and as this 2020 season and next offseason play out I believe you’ll see the offers pour in for this young man.
Like Parker, Cameron Collins Cameron Collins 6'4" | 265 lbs | OL St. Xavier | 2022 State OH has received numerous offers from schools across the MAC conference, but he’s also received interest from P5 schools Louisville, Michigan State, and Kentucky. The 6’4 260 pound Junior stands out for his footwork, and agility for his size. Collins has room to continue to fill out and add strength that will continue to round out his game.
Which brings me to Senior Jackson Wassler. The 6’7 275 right tackle did more than hold his own all night long. Wassler is a good athlete who uses his length well. While Wassler hasn’t garnered a great deal of interest from the D1 level as of yet, he should absolutely be on their radar. He’s a legit 6’7 who will easily fill out to 300 and with the added strength, conditioning, and training table of a D1 could develop into a strong D1 starting offensive lineman.
Penn State commit Liam Clifford Liam Clifford 6'1" | 200 lbs | WR St. Xavier | 2021 State OH didn’t have a huge night, but did score a touchdown on a catch, run and dive into the endzone. Clifford is definitely a Big Ten Power 5 caliber wr. His combination of size, speed, and route running is on point. I expect Clifford to play well and produce at the next Level.
Junior running back Charles Kellom flashed as well. The 6’0 183 pound running back showed good vision, strength, and solid speed. He also showed versatility as he caught a wheel route and then took it 60 yards to the house. Kellom definitely has the ability to be a D2 with an upside of a small D1 and room to grow.
La Salle
While it took a while to get through all of the talent on the St. X side of the ball, La Salle had some talent of their own.
Senior Quarterback Zach Branam had a strong game. Throwing for over 200 yards and rushing for 94 yards Branam fought all night long to keep his team in the game. He showed nice touch on a deep ball for La Salle’s only touchdown on the night. His ability to scramble and use his legs to hurt defenses is a big part of his game. Branam is currently getting interest from D3 colleges across Ohio, and should excel at that level.
Offensive Lineman Paul Haywood Paul Haywood 6'4" | 310 lbs | OL La Salle | 2022 OH is the anchor of La Salle’s offensive line he’s a 2022 that is receiving interest from D1 mid-majors Miami of Ohio and Marshall. Standing 6’4 and 315 pounds Haywood has D1 ready made size. He’s a bullish run blocker that plays to the whistle. Haywood should continue to see interest from MAC Schools and the like.
La Salle could never really get running back Gi’Bran Payne going in the rush game, to no fault of his own. That being said, Payne found other ways to make himself a threat to the St. X defense as he came up with big receptions of 44 and a 32 yard catch which he scored a touchdown on. Gi’Bran is extremely elusive. He’s a hard tackle, but he also has the breakaway speed that will scare defensive coordinators senseless. While he can run the ball with success his versatility to be split out as a wide receiver is what makes him a total threat and earned him offers from major D1 Powers Alabama and the University of Florida. As the season goes on he’ll only be more highly sought after.
